Not really a carpenter.
This is exactly the issue - not to mention that the gamification of fact-checking offloads all responsibility to the users in ways that only drive additional attention to bad actors. It's a lose-lose scenario for truth.

I'll bite on this. I agree that fact-checking has not been ideal, but we have to recognize Meta's dissolution of its fact-checking program for what it is: the final blow in a series of attacks on transparency and accountability that included lawsuits against researchers and closing of CrowdTangle.

I won't defend Meta here but I have a contrarian view: Fact-checking was not working and facts aren't the issue; belief and belonging are and that's a much deeper problem. I can't wait to see how Meta's new "community notes" feature handles this when the name change somehow becomes law (*sarcasm*)

If there's *ONE* thing Facebook... (*cough*) I mean Meta.... is good at, it's the ability to go all-in on unproven concepts.

Genuinely baffled by the unempirical assertion that Community Notes “works.” Does it? How do Meta know? The best available research is pretty mixed on this point. And as they go all-in on an unproven concept, will Meta commit to publicly releasing data so people can actually study this?

"Extinction-level event for truth on social media" ... yup, that pretty much sums it up.

Got out early this morning to surf cast on the Outer Banks. Didn't catch anything, but was rewarded with plenty of other wildlife, including dolphins, horseshoe crabs, pelicans, cormorants, and the biggest seashell I've ever found.

NEW: Meta earns millions from deceptive political ads.

We found over 100,000 deceptive US political & social issues ads across +200 FB pages. Some pages falsely claimed to be run by the government and the ads were rife with deepfakes and false claims.

Exploiting Meta’s Weaknesses, Deceptive Political Ads Thrived on Facebook and Instagram in Run-Up to Election

Despite Meta's stated commitment to crack down on harmful content, it failed to catch tens of thousands of ads that used false claims and deepfakes of political figures to collect users’ sensitive personal data or bait them into monthly charges.

As a former English major I am embarrassed to admit that I only just realized that we have missed many opportunities to use literary allusions to Milton's Paradise Lost in reference to this imminent hurricane. #milton
