"Actually, studies have shown that riders using pedal-assists—a type of e-bike that amplifies your pedal power but does not take over entirely—get more exercise than those on regular bikes, because they cycle longer and more frequently.”

Hell on Two Wheels, Until the E-Bike’s Battery Runs Out

In 2020, Americans bought more than twice as many electric bikes as electric cars. Patricia Marx test-drove a fleet of them, including a Vado SL and a Gocycle G4i.

This is an interesting finding and helpful to know!

@TheWarOnCars Interesting and not surprising. I tried to reply re. my Santa ebike, but it seems to have gotten stuck in a glacier or somethin

Attached: 1 image Santa came early for me this year. He delivered my e-bike in May. Demand for e-bikes is so great that he needs to spread delivery over the year. I did get to thank him in person earlier this month, before the arctic blast. This bike is my grocery-getter. I still enjoy my acoustic bikes for many other purposes. Bike is a Priority Current, belt drive, continuously variable internally geared Enviolo hub—sweet ride and technology but honestly the Shimano hub would have sufficed.

@TheWarOnCars I feel this study is inaccurate. who were the subjects? If I used pedal assist, I would get way less exercise
@darylcognito @TheWarOnCars I think the idea is most people will use an e-bike way more and make up for the lost of intensity with duration. A problem keeping someone from commuting to work, "I don't want to get to the office all sweaty, from riding up that hill." Could be solved with an e-bike.
@joemcintyre @TheWarOnCars I guess if they surveyed non riders it would explain the results. But e bike won't solve winter
@darylcognito @TheWarOnCars I live in PA and cycled to and from work for 7 years. It was only 3 miles. In winter there are problems for sure. In my area there isn't t dedicated cycling infrastructure or snow removal. Where it was safest to ride on the side walk, icy snow banks on the ramps could be a problem. But quickly after a storm regular foot traffic usually made a path. A bike only needs a few inches to get through. Makes you feel bad for someone in a wheelchair though.
@darylcognito @TheWarOnCars
The cold really isn't a problem but has to be managed. But if you ski, you probably have the required gear already.

@darylcognito @TheWarOnCars
Not Just Bikes has a great video about what the true issues of winter cycling is.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uhx-26GfCBU

Cycling on snow isn't much of an issue, ice can be. The one day I was on my way home and a snow storm had shut down the two main ways out of the city. Car commuters were stuck in the city until 1 in the morning, literally every road in the city had bumper to bumper cars stopped. My bike just road up hills cars were just spinning tires on.

@darylcognito @TheWarOnCars I had stopped to push many. When it be came clear they just would get stuck again, I started asking how far they had to walk and told them to park the car and get going.
@darylcognito @TheWarOnCars
Sorry, I forgot about how snarky he gets in that video.
@joemcintyre @TheWarOnCars
I would commute by bike (live less than 10 k from work) however, I drive for work. By working from home for paper, meetings etc. and travel in community for clients time has reduced my vehicle time and improved my work. lets stop with low hanging fruit like E bikes and push all politician to remote, no more travel from Ottawa to riding, no international travel. Tax incentive for local vacation, tax the crap out of air travel. Let's actually do something.
@darylcognito @TheWarOnCars it's because ebikes aren't used in exactly the same way as a regular bike.

@TheWarOnCars @darylcognito I’m sure your anecdotal evidence is much better science than this study.

Have you read the study, or do you just want someone else to do the work for you?

@Trine_DK @TheWarOnCars

do you think this is twitter or something? It was a comment, an observation. Not here to do a shit load of research to have conversation. I didn't present proof nor did I demand it.

The only way to address climate change is to consume less, Electric cars/bikes, imo, are just a way to get us to consume more. Capitalism is not compatible with reversing climate change

@darylcognito @Trine_DK @TheWarOnCars
Dying from cardiac arrest will make you consume less. So just stay at home, enjoy your couch.

E-bikes make more exercise, which gives a longer life.

@tuekappel @Trine_DK @TheWarOnCars yet the mining for th minerals puts ppl I poorer countries at risk due to environmental poisons and conflict, pollute water and air. You can't consume different and expect anything to change. End capitalism, buy less, travel less and go for a walk, it is good for your heart.
@darylcognito
So lets end all electric machinery at this instant. Have a good time pedaling your car to work. I ride 2x13k every day on my singlespeed. So piss off.
@tuekappel You missed that right turn at Albuquerque, Twitter is the next data centre over.
@TheWarOnCars @darylcognito the premise is that E assist changes when, where and how we ride. If you simply replace your analog bike with a e bike for you normal riding pattern then certainly your calorie expense would go down. If instead an e bike meant you rode more often, over longer distances and replaced car trips then yes your calorie expense rises. That’s been my experience even with the e bike being less than a quarter of my rides.
@TheWarOnCars Can confirm! We've put over 15,000 miles on our E-cargo bike in 33 months. Most of those miles would have been driving but since we purchased the e-bike I no longer drive! There's no way I would have biked those miles without e-assist. Hauling a kid, their bike and groceries up these hills is tough!...I did it for a short time on a non-electric cargo bike. It was not pleasant. 😆
@ShawneMartinez this is incredible. I knew you rode a lot but I didn’t know it was this much!!
@atmendez it's amazing how all of those short 5 mile trips add up! Then on big days I'm sure glad we have dual batteries. I rode the first 18 months or so with a single battery and that range anxiety is real! Recently picked up the 5k sticker from Splendid to go with the 10k. 🏆
@ShawneMartinez @TheWarOnCars That's amazing! I just got my #ebike in November. Hope to use it to replace most local trips once winter recedes a little!
@JulieEmery @TheWarOnCars
I've made terrible transportation choices in the past. Hopefully I can make a difference for my kid's future. 🙏 Thank you for trying #ActiveTransportation 🥰
@ShawneMartinez @TheWarOnCars
How do you deal with aggressive car drivers? I've gradually given up on road cycling due to many near misses. The anger level is truly frightening.
@JoeChip @TheWarOnCars
Volunteering with #BikeLoudPDX has been amazing! I've learned to use my lane position to prevent close/unsafe passing. We staff a booth at the farmer's market to educate our neighbors. #GetInvolved with your local advocacy group! #GroupRides #Events #Education

@ShawneMartinez @TheWarOnCars

Wow, and I was impressed with our 1500 miles over the last 12 months!

@thehomespundays @TheWarOnCars
1,500 car-free miles is an amazing accomplishment! Any #ActiveTransportation is #OneLessCar making our streets safer for everyone! 🥰
@ShawneMartinez @TheWarOnCars that’s a big hilly ride even with electric assist! Love these ebike success stories. They’re like kitten videos for me
@dgodon @TheWarOnCars
Our e-Bullitt is 250w mid drive, not super powerful but enough to make a huge difference. I still have to put in work!

@TheWarOnCars

Pedal assist is a bike. Throttle is a motorcycle.
