Oh. my. god.

Madison Square Garden used facial recognition to identify and stop a mom from attending a Christmas show with her kid because she's an attorney at a firm who is engaged in litigation with them.

This is why it's not enough to just ban government and law enforcement use of #facialrecognition. There are so many ways private companies and even individuals can abuse #biometric #surveillance tech.

#BanFacialRecognition entirely. Yesterday.

Here's @team statement on this:

We call for #MadisonSquareGarden to immediately end all use of #facialrecognition and #biometric #surveillance tech.

And we call on lawmakers to enact a ban on all use of facial recognition in places of public accommodation, as defined by the ADA.

BREAKING: Madison Square Garden uses facial recognition to bar mom from attending Christmas concert with her daugher

NBC News is reporting that Madison Square Garden used facial recognition surveillance to identify and stop a mom who was attending the iconic Christmas show at Radio City Music Hall with her daughter, a literal girl scout. The mom was then thrown out of the venue, because she works for a law firm that is […]

Fight for the Future

@evangreer This is how the Boston Marathon Race bombers were caught. Public cameras. I have no problem with facial recognition and public cameras. Try walking in London without being on a dozen cameras.

The use that the Madison Square Garden used it for is despicable and they should pay a penalty. Not attending anything in MSG I can easily do. (I live in Boston)

@paultmorrison @evangreer uh, msg corporation owns venues worldwide.
@bbennettesq @evangreer Also boycotting Boston Calling Events, LLC (BCE) and I hate the Knicks.

@evangreer @team

Seriously? Aside from the very real and serious privacy concerns, I mean, how downright petty is this?

@evangreer @team
To be clear - she was denied entrance to Radio City Music Hall by owners MSG corp, which is owned by primal asshole James Dolan and family.
@evangreer @team
And it's it catches a suicide bomber, or more likely in The USA, a nut job with a gun and an urge to shoot people.
Banning people from their premises for personal reasons just makes them look petty.
@evangreer And she going after their liquor license

@evangreer

It looks like the company in question might have gone to https://www.dsslaw.com/our-firm/attorneys/ and added all of the employee pictures to the banned faces database.

@hcetamd @evangreer it’s not really a “company”, it’s just a wealthy bro (James Dolan) who owns the company doing whatever he wants. Sounds familiar, actually.
@hcetamd @evangreer It has all the characteristics of Clearview and there is evidence they lied about using it I’m sure that case info is public domain
Clearview AI agrees to restrict use of face database

In a lawsuit settlement, the facial recognition startup will stop selling its collection to businesses and individuals in the US

The Guardian
@evangreer literally a technology with no positive application

@Pizza_p_Parker @evangreer Not so.

I want to have eyeglasses with facial recognition cameras on them to help me with my face blindness issues. Who is this person I'm talking to, and how do I know them? When is the last time I talked to them? What unanswered questions from our last conversation ("How's your kid doing at <college>? How's your spouse doing after <medical problem treatment>?") are there?

It has a use as assistive technology for people with disabilities.

@Pizza_p_Parker @evangreer It's like if wheelchairs were predominantly rocket powered and used by able-bodied wealthy people to mow down pedestrians. "Technology with no positive use!" Baloney. It's technology that has very positive uses, but THEY DON'T MAKE TONS OF MONEY like the horrible uses do.
@packy @evangreer I had no idea that face blindness was a thing and that upsets me. that being said, we'd then get into the logistical issues with the tech because they draw from AI and databases, so that would be a puzzle for individual deployment.
@Pizza_p_Parker @evangreer Yeah, there's logistical problems for sure, and that takes time and money to work out, which is why this hasn't been done already. :(
@packy @evangreer my concern isn't for money and time cos a team of PhD's and grad students with enough dedication and federal/university grants for cup ramen can take care of it. My worry is how that tech will be utilized outside of accessibility by corporations, fascist gangs, and the state. those three will never use it for good.

@Pizza_p_Parker @evangreer

Rubbish. Facial recognition is useful for all sorts of things ... it's a core part of identifying who you say you are.

And all technology can be used in a negative way, including the platform you are on now. What you want to blame all technology for everything?

People, in this case MSG, need to take responsibility for how this bit of tech is being used.

@LePeche @evangreer talk to me when you work in tech, bud
@Pizza_p_Parker There are, of course, positive applications. For instance, instantly obtaining the identification of an abductor from security cam footage, or identifying people with outstanding warrants for their arrest in real time from footage of a large crowd. Etc.
@CharlieBBarkin I don't consider serving warrants to be a legitimately good thing. besides which, the false positive rate and racial biases prove that to be impractical
@CharlieBBarkin oh you're a landlord, fuck off and get a job
Juggalo Makeup Blocks Facial Recognition Software

It turns out, facial recognition software can't spot you if you're wearing the black-and-white face makeup sported by he Insane Clown Posse's Juggalos.

Nerdist
@infinite_loopy @evangreer So wait lemme get this straight you're saying the future is people running around with clown faces, and The Dark Knight, Gotham and Joker predicted it?!
@freequaybuoy @evangreer It was inevitable, really.
@infinite_loopy Well shiiiit, then anything might be possible. One day we might finally find out how the three shells work, whether Emilio Estevez is actually Anthony Hopkins and hey maybe actually get to live on Hadley's Hope.
@infinite_loopy @evangreer if ever was a good reason to be down with the clown till yer dead in the ground this is it. Whoop whoop! MWCL!

@evangreer It's kind of funny how they pointed this tech at the one group of people (apart from maybe politicians) who are the best equipped to address it in a way that might actually change something, though
‘NO’: Grad Students Analyze, Hack, and Remove Under-Desk Surveillance Devices Designed to Track Them

In October, the university quietly introduced heat sensors under desk without notifying students or seeking their consent. Students removed the devices, hacked them, and were able to force the university to stop its surveillance.

@Andres4NY @grusgrus @evangreer
Academic fraud lady was also a Northeastern professor lol. They seem to be having a rough time.
@grusgrus @evangreer oh, thanks for giving me another thing to sue you about
@evangreer @aleen Another reason to wear masks!
@evangreer Wow, that's - in the lack of a better word - insane. This is basically privately operated Social Credits. Not okay - for so many reasons.

@evangreer I understand the lack of reasoning with tech bros and how they put their stuff all over the place like a 3 year old.

Wear a mask, if possible wear sunglasses too
Wear a hat, a beanie, something to cover your hair
A Balaklava would take care of the above, but not always a reasonable wear.

Besides, we're still in a pandemic, wearing a mask should be a normal thing.

Give yourself a layer of viral protection and a layer of privacy protection at the same time

@littletranspunk @evangreer wearing a mask is only a sticking plaster for a much bigger problem. Facial recognition is the tip of the iceberg: gait analysis can recognise people from their walk (even if you fake a limp) and smart beacons can recognise your devices. The broader principle is at stake here. We can't escape it, we have to regulate or ban it.
@Shadician @evangreer I understand that. I'm just thinking of reducing the capability of systems widely out there already
@littletranspunk @evangreer I would, but sadly it is illegal where i live. The police requires like three of your facial features to be seen at all times and are not shy about fining people for it. I often do it anyway, but if you are anywhere remotely close to them, you are in trouble.
@catraxx @evangreer that sounds illegal to have such laws. If you're in the us, then I would think it could fall under freedom of expression since clothing can be speech in its own way
@evangreer
This is a bizarre and mean-spirited transgression of family/educational norms. She is there as a mom! #ChurchAndState #MomAndChild #Overreach
@Viss
@evangreer Did they refund her for those tickets they allowed her to purchase?

@evangreer

"If you've done nothing wrong, you've nothing to hide."

🙄

@charlesroper @evangreer I hate that shit. Hate it. It completely ignores the fact that things change. "But my government isn't evil" ... now. It is not evil NOW. Things can change. Do you want to hand over that big bunch of data that confirms all the things you have done and that suddenly are illegal to this new government, too?
@evangreer Banning people like that should be illegal anyway. Is it not discriminatory somehow?
@evangreer I hope she sues their a$$es off and wins

@evangreer Yes, of course.

The technology is used against the people. Like in Russia, like in China, ...

@evangreer
I'd like to think facial recognition software might help keep patrons at the MSG safe from fugitive sex offenders. Not so sure about lawyer moms, though.
@evangreer Wow. We have to start making some rules. While I still believe that facial recognition is helpful for capturing fugitives, this egregious tactic should be against the law. We need some rules of the road, because it's not going away. #facialrecognitionrulesnow
@evangreer I hope she sues them
@evangreer
Guess she should sue them, such discrimination is illegal.
@evangreer Is that even legal, or constitutional? Not even the facial rec - just removing her?
@evangreer @freequaybuoy If any of the banned people are EU citizens, time for them to release the GDPR Rottweiler.
@jerseygryphon @evangreer @freequaybuoy nope. If they purchased tickets online they will have had to consent to T&Cs which will include use of P11 or personal data.
@evangreer Data Rights are human rights.
@evangreer Entirely? Are there no conceivable uses of facial recognition technology, now or in the near to mid-term, that are beneficial? E.g., isn't face unlock a form of facial recognition tech?
