Not actually a cat in real life, just a cat herder

Big fan of alt text and captions

Don't fall for firms pushing "voice verification" bypasses.

A suggestion. If a firm you deal with offers to sign you up for a "voice verification" service that bypasses PINs, passwords, etc., you would be wise to decline. There are increasing reports of online AI voice generators being used to defraud customers via these systems. And the situation is likely to only be getting worse.

Infosec question: if your previous company did not remove your root access account, is it crossing any lines to login and set up a cron script to send out mocking emails about your prior management's lack of interest in the systems?
We should make a Sysadmin Union and demand programmers stop writing bugs.

Ok, long overdue bio post:

I am a person who has worked in the tech sector for my entire adult life.

Started as a strictly Windows support tech, worked my way up to "jack of all trades" systems admin.

Currently pondering the state of the world and looking to pivot my career into something more meaningful without having to re-learn an entire career and start from scratch.

Anyway, I'm now not allowed to even post, so perhaps it's again time to get serious about using the elephant site instead....
Love tooo be told liking too many posts is "spam or malicious activity"

Rana Foroohar does a great job showing how stock buybacks are only good for the stock shareholders who get dividends in her book "Makers and Takers" and I highly recommend it https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/26150584-makers-and-takers

Oh this does not look good. Google authorized a 70b buyback of company stock. https://www.cnbc.com/2023/04/25/google-authorizes-70-billion-buyback.html This is only a quarter after they laid-off 12,000 employees? https://www.cnbc.com/2023/01/20/google-to-lay-off-12000-people-memo-from-ceo-sundar-pichai-says.html This is pure gluttony.

I understand telnet *server* has been deprecated, but why does this apply to telnet *client*?

There have been over 20 legislators to cite "kids identifying as cats" to ban basic accommodations for trans people but this is the first bill to actually attempt to put it into law.

This is how far anti-trans panic has gone.

We should all be embarrassed that companies in the entertainment industry are taking leadership positions on pushing back against fascism, while companies involved in journalism, education, and publishing, are taking the collaborator stance.

The parts of society that everyone promised would save us from fascism, are failing. The parts of society that the Very Serious People (tm) saw as frivolous pastimes, are providing more truth and safety.

This is the Teen Vogue'ification of the world.
