A big thanks to Naomi Schneider and the team at University of California Press for their championship of this! More on the book soon

Borders and Bytes | Ruha Benjamin | INQUEST

So-called “smart” borders are just more sophisticated sites of racialized surveillance and violence. We need abolitionist tools to counter them.

In which @[email protected] and I join forces in an Avengers-level team-up ... to discuss where the AI discourse falls short, and why we should be asking whether certain tools should even be built, the policies they mask, and the rights they violate.

Oh. my. god.

Madison Square Garden used facial recognition to identify and stop a mom from attending a Christmas show with her kid because she's an attorney at a firm who is engaged in litigation with them.

This is why it's not enough to just ban government and law enforcement use of #facialrecognition. There are so many ways private companies and even individuals can abuse #biometric #surveillance tech.

#BanFacialRecognition entirely. Yesterday.

Using Amazon's #Rekognition technology, #Spotlight use the moralising narrative of humanitarian uses to extend #carceral networks, putting marginalised consenting #sexworkers at-large (and their networks) at further risk, while expanding policing powers. The excuse is stopping child trafficking, but the practical applications show an expansion of the hostile terrain–featuring tech-augmented police harassment–that endangers folx in the first place. Sarah is one of many.

Amazon, Ashton Kutcher And America’s Surveillance Of The Sex Trade

Huge police databases armed with Amazon’s facial recognition are harvesting online sex ads of exploited children and consenting sex workers alike. Forbes finds that even when wielding a mass surveillance arsenal, cops can and do fail to keep sex workers and trafficking victims safe.
