It's fascinating and disturbing watching people take the plain language of the new policy and twist it to mean "well, they're really only going after spammers..."

It is clearly not that. There are two separate sections, one specifically about content *on the tweet level* and another on suspension of accounts.

People are happily concluding the latter precludes the former and it's driving me mad.

@TechConnectify honestly Twitter for its entire existence has been excellent proof of the fact that information availability is not enough to fight propaganda

like, just because you can look up the reasons for things easily, doesn't mean that you will, ever

@TechConnectify You can only miss something so obvious so many times. Eventually, you have to admit that it's just intentionally looking away.

@TechConnectify Their fans are doing some amazing mental gymnastics!

Spammers don't even use these links to begin with, they create links that are mostly crypto related. It's unreal.

@DeviantXS @TechConnectify
Yeah it's definitely not about spam. It's entirely about bleeding users. If they *only* prevented links to Mastodon it would say they see it specifically as a threat so they're blocking pretty much all links to any other social media site instead.
@DeviantXS @TechConnectify frrrr like they legit proposed a solution to a problem that never existed and now created a whole new problem for its users. Like congrats you played yourself???
@TechConnectify people circling the “solely” and completely ignoring the rest of the policy, I’m not sure they are maliciously ignoring it or they are actually not getting it.

@cisne I think they earnestly think that it clarifies and/or qualifies everything prior.

Policy language can be confusing. In this case they're ignoring the "content" and "accounts" distinction, methinks.

@TechConnectify @cisne They're also ignoring the fact that Twitter had already been banning people who post links to Mastodon and preventing people from linking to it in their profile for a few days now.

All they did today was to formally write down that policy and escalate it by adding Instagram, Facebook and a bunch of other sites to the ban.

@TechConnectify also they wrongfully assume that the site has to abide by its own rules
@TechConnectify There must've been a fair share of folks on the eastern side of Berlin wall honestly believing it was there to protect them.

@TechConnectify

So much for Phony Starks bluster about free speech.

Massively hypocritical and juvenile.

Also he's happy for inbound links to the Fowl Place from Facebook or Mastodon.

Which regulatory bodies will be investigating this and how quickly?

@simonzerafa @TechConnectify I'm fairly sure the EU will take umbrage at this. I think it contravenes at least 1 EU law.

@simonzerafa @TechConnectify I don't think there are any regulations being broken by the double standard of accepting links in and banning for links out.

It is a terrible business move however, and it seems that the market is punishing it (along with the rest of Musk's moves concerning his management), as evidenced by the exodus of people to services like Mastodon.

I just find it interesting that he's so keen to call for regulations to stop the market from moving away.

@rusozoll @TechConnectify

The FTC and EU might think differently. We shall see 🙂🤷‍♂️

@TechConnectify You’ll do your own mental health a favour if you don’t presume these folks care about consistency or rationality.
@TechConnectify Problem is - current Help ste states both: Any Link to other platforms is a violation, however links to them are still allowed.

@TechConnectify rarely do people outside an abusive relationship get to see what enablers look like so clearly

any one of these people are also the type to make up a reason why someone they know abused someone else. they invent a fantasy so that they can forget about what they’ve seen with their own eyes and go back to being comfortable and unchallenged

a negative peace

@TechConnectify I don't think they're "happily concluding" anything - I think they're engaging in bad faith because SK is "their guy" and they have to spin the facts as they are.

Either way, the only productive choices are to either not respond, or to respond in a way that makes it clear that you don't think they earnestly believe what they're saying and start guessing at their actual intentions.

@TechConnectify they’re also clearly not going after spammers; spammers profit off their promotion, and the new policy clearly and explicitly excludes paid promotion!
@TechConnectify Notable (to me) that Substack & Medium aren’t on the list.
@TechConnectify And they already have rules! in place! to deal with spam!!

@TechConnectify oh sh- Tech Connections is #onhere now??? you gotta try syndicating to Peertube next

srsly tho, your channel is the only direct concrete evidence I have that anybody gives as much of a shit about lighting as I do, and/or notices things at the same level of detail I do!

long live incandescent fairy lights with yellow instead of orange!! pretty sure a set of these in my childhood bedroom had something to do with the start of my fascination.

@TechConnectify it's especially aggravating because tweets with links to Mastodon instances are being blocked before they can be posted. The intent is blatant.

@TechConnectify I like the Technology Connections that doesn't focus on elon and twitter, it's tiresome. Can we get that back again?

Definitely the worst part of twits moving to mastodon is the uptick in hearing about that asshole and his website.

@craftyguy @TechConnectify You clicked through the CW. That’s what it’s there for. That’s why Alec has been putting this stuff behind a CW. I am interested in the discourse and mild schadenfreude behind Twitter’s flailing desperation.
@TechConnectify to be fair, some people have a hard time seeing over elon's boot when it's down their throat like that
@TechConnectify People hate to believe their institutions are crumbling. Happens every time. Refusing to recognise it just lets it happen.
@TechConnectify I don't think anyone knows what is happening - including the people making the rules. I figure the site is one good failure away from complete collapse.
@TechConnectify Hypothetically, If I was to tweet "I'm streaming" with a link to the stream, could I say "There are links in my Twitch profile. Just saying."?
@TechConnectify i saw a tweet from twitter support saying that people were still allowed to tweet links to other sites, this tweet has since been deleted which i think says a lot

@TechConnectify

If we interpret the language carefully, you can technically still promote YouTube content.

So you *could* keep using your profile to post YouTube links.

@TechConnectify

Actually, I take that back. Posting only links to YouTube is banned as well, as long as you consider YouTube a social media platform

@TechConnectify I wouldn't overthink it. A lot of them are pretty much just bootlickers for daddy Elon, and will look for any way to justiy what he's saying.

@TechConnectify

It's obvious this is an ego move from Musk. It's no coincidence twitter spaces were removed when he didn't do so well in one- twitter competitors are now banned form twitter as they're drawing in users from Musk's terrible moves.

@TechConnectify It's also untenable. Mastodon, with it's decentralized nature, will constantly have new instances with new urls popping up. And people will just make new link aggregator sites as they serve a useful purpose.
@TechConnectify He is trying to make his original everything app idea work. First step was to acquire users, next is to trap them.
@TechConnectify it's chat bots. Very few real humans having those thoughts naturally.

@TechConnectify
I'm deliberately violating that with my pinned tweet.. I won't put any new tweets putting up my handle.. but as far as I'm concerned, if the muskman wants to take them down, he can be my guest, I ain't doing it for him.

It proves that musk has done one thing: started a game of wack a mole with mastodon handles.

Hell, suspending my account is fine too, it's a great way to make sure my handle isn't stolen(not that it ever will be)... maybe I'll finally never go back if they do.

@TechConnectify I genuinely hate elon and everything he stand for, every decision he has made so far had been a shitty one, Going to keep using twitter until most of the people i follow switch to mastadon then i'm fucking off
@TechConnectify Elon's coattail riders view his proclamations in much the same they do the bible, they say what they want them to say if it can be used justify forcing the will of their chosen overlord onto others. Even if the decrees contradict themselves.
And the best part: it's illegal in other big parts of the world to gatekeep like that.
For the EU, gatekeepikg is forbidden (users have to be allowed tonlink to other pages and other companies) and blocking personal tweets and DMs make Twitter into editorial media. Which means Twitter becomes itself responsible for illegal content on their side shared by users.
I mean, Elon clearly never cares about fogein policies, but Twitter can be sued for a lot of things right now.
@TechConnectify test to see if i can reply to tweets across different servers, anyway that sucks a lot
@TechConnectify Deleting my existing bird app account is something I am heavily considering at this rate. I feel like every time I open it now I take a year off my life. 🤔

@TechConnectify When I logged in to see if my Masto links had been zapped yet - I got a full page "Make your Profile Pic an NFT" prompt. So that is apparently allowed.

And it does remind me of the attempts at Vendor lock in with the Tesla Chargers etc - make it difficult to leave the Ecosystem

@TechConnectify In other news: People finding out how fascism so easily spread in 1930's Germany.

@TechConnectify They are even sensing out messages that says the new policy is making it bannable to promote competition.

Promote competition. Plenty of screenshots of it.

I wonder who he’s going after when the critics and competition is gone. Maybe his childhood memories of Apartheid will surface?

@TechConnectify I'm crawling up the Mastodon learning curve and this is my first try at a reply. Hopefully I'm not breaking etiquette.

Has anyone mentioned the damage to the new bird site owners personal brand? If I were in the market for an EV, and I will be when my building completes the contact to install charging in the garage, vehicle brand T will not be a consideration for me. How do I know I won't get my car bricked if I offend the boss? Or maybe my brakes will malfunction?

@EricHoehn The smart ones are considering it, yeah.

It's interesting how Tesla stock has basically been on a steady decline since Elon started floating the idea of buying Twitter. I don't see this going well.

@TechConnectify Agreed. I like the Ionic 5 (even before you got one) and the VW microbus is also a contender for me. Whatever I get it will have an 800 volt system even though I plan to use level 2 most of the time.
@TechConnectify Im happy to see you here, long time fan of your channel and curious to see how mastadon works out for all of us
@TechConnectify So, I am trying to find the people I follow on twitter… I am not having much luck. Like Dan Rather… How do I know that the person I am following is the actual person. Kinda getting into the new how do I know the person is the actual person on twitter…
@TechConnectify honestly, I've never seen such an overt hypocrite so thoroughly document their own hypocrisy. ಠ_ಠ
@TechConnectify Good lord are all these content warnings tedious though. I get that they're optional but even after checking the box to automatically expand them on my end, they uh... Aren't doing that. Not on the android app at least.
