Imagine a piece of tissue paper.

Coat it with cyanotype chemicals.

Fold it into an origami crane.

Let it be a crane for a while, in any place with a bit of light. Ignore it, play with it, whatever.

After a while, unfold it. Develop.

You'll get an image.

The image is the memory of it's experience as an origami crane.

Repeat. Every crane's experience - and hence every image - will be unique.

Here's 4 out of the >750 I've made so far.

@cyanotype This is a fantastic idea and really well executed.
@cyanotype very beautiful process, and results !
@neon_livide Thank you! I'm aiming for senbazuru (1000 cranes) but it's taking a while.... and I'm having some long breaks between cranes.
@cyanotype How fascinating, what a lovely process

@cyanotype

@ZDP189 I think this will be right up your street!

@cyanotype that is cool, think I need to try that some time
@cyanotype I've been meaning to play with cyanotype and this may have just given me the inspiration I needed 🤩
@jjcelery Cyanotype is very forgiving, and really easy. Go for it!

@cyanotype

Wow, that’s incredibly beautiful. 🤩

@cyanotype tagging @BeamsAndBows because this is very up her alley
@cyanotype I have no idea why this brought tears to my eyes. Thank you.
@bleepnik /swooning/ Thank you so much, I'm glad you found it so... well, whatever it did for you I'm happy!
@cyanotype
That's really nice !
Both the process and the result
@cyanotype this is brilliant! I was recently mulling over whether or not I want to buy cyanotype paper and now I’m sold :)
@anu1905 If you can, I would recommend getting the chemicals and coating paper yourself. It ends up sooo much cheaper, you can coat any paper you like, the results are better, and it's more fun!
Having said that, any cyanotype is better than no cyanotype!
@cyanotype I’ll try! thanks for the tip :)
@cyanotype @DawnCole Dawn, you might like this - I wonder how it would play out with your orbs?
@cyanotype Alun, this is beautiful and fascinating.
@AdaraAstin Thank you so much, I'm glad you like it!
@cyanotype Wow, that's gorgeous! Brilliant project.
@cyanotype you’ve inspired me to haul out my #cyanotype supplies! Sadly, rolling into winter in my northern latitude, so exposure times will be epic!

@profannieoakley Yay! I never mind the long exposures, it's an excuse to sit and mind wander for a while. Think about the next one.

Also, I managed to take a cyantoype of icicles hanging from a branch once. Northern latitudes bring new subjects!

@profannieoakley @cyanotype buy a lamp :) 395nm to 420nm led. lots on evil Amazon but maybe you could get similar from elsewhere
@cyanotype this is amazing. I have been a photographer and filmmaker since childhood and am dealing with the fallible memories of again parents. Your art strikes a very familiar and personal chord with me.
@andy Thank you Andy. It has been an utter privilege to work with and learn from people living with dementia. They continue to inspire me in so many ways. I just hope to build empathy and understanding of their lived experience in any way I can.
Best wishes to you and your parents.
@cyanotype interesting. As a kid I used to make them out of chewing gum stick wrappers. I made hundreds, don't recall if I ever reached 1000. Now I can't remember how to fold one at all.
@hyc I love that you can create something amazing from a scrap of paper or a sweet wrapper!
@cyanotype that's a wonderful idea.
@cyanotype beautiful concept, wonderful execution! Bravo!
@cyanotype beautiful concept and incredibly appealing.
@cyanotype thanks for sharing this - that's lovely.
@cyanotype This would be fun on cloth! Add some starch for while it's being an origami crane...
@RuTemple There are some origami forms (like the tato) which are historically folded in fabric and used as purses.
There's also another way to get this image on fabric... but I'll save that for another time!

@cyanotype

As someone who has loved origami since I was a child and someone who has always wanted to play with cyanotype, I could not love this more. I can’t wait to see more of the 750!

Love, love, love it.

@cyanotype Love the whole concept❤️
@cyanotype I like both origami and decorated papers, it's a very nice achievement!
@cyanotype Intriguimg and beautiful work! Your exploration of memory and identity in the origami art form is genius. Such a tangible expression of individuality and how the pressures of existence shape who we become.
@cyanotype I'm going to try this. I have some of this paper laying around... But rather than a crane I think I will make platonic solids.

@cyanotype

I feel like you've captured an image of the qualia of each bird. Similar yet unique.

Wow. Just...wow. <3

@cyanotype woah this is super cool! @lake we should try this technique!
@liaizon @cyanotype oooh yes would love to do some cyanotype experimenting!
@cyanotype I love this so much. 🙏
@cyanotype 250 more and you can make a wish
@cyanotype I made origami once or twice with cyanotype when I was a kid - I was obsessed with both! This project is really cool

@cyanotype
As if it wasn't already hard enough to resist the urges to buy every pack of origami paper and cyanotype paper that I stumble across.

😍
