Infosec.exchange is now the 21st most populous mastodon instance, yet we're 34x smaller than the largest instance.
@jerry I kind of wish the security community would fully coalesce around this instance, but that's probably applying a 'twitter mindset' to a non-twitter platform.
@danielkennedy74 I expect as people settle in, we'll see some moving around. I don't know if that'll be more consolidation here, or more movement to a bunch of smaller instances.
@jerry do you want it to grow, or rather not? I can see advantages in both.
@mvanleening I am hopeful that it keeps growing. I will tell you that is a bit of a push and pull debate.
@jerry Larger doesn't always mean better πŸ˜‰πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ
@simonzerafa that is very true. Some people will see it as better, and some will not
@jerry Where does one see these numbers?

@jerry @invisiblethreat Why does that site give our HTTPS an F?
@Xavier @invisiblethreat I haven’t figured that out
@jerry @Xavier @invisiblethreat I suspect you were seeing a bad score because you were supporting some weak crypto
Everything looks A+ now
@webhat @Xavier @invisiblethreat that's been a+ for a long, long time. Instances.social still rates us an F for TLS
@jerry @Xavier @invisiblethreat sorry, I missed that due to bad threading
@jerry @TheKinrar does infosec.exchange get a bad TLS security rating because of the failures in the instance log?

@jerry it looks like supporting weak encryption is what's giving you a bad score
@jerry There's a popular book that advocates, as part of achieving greatness, the need to get the right people on the bus, the wrong people off the bus, and the right people in the right seats. So far, this instance seems to have done an amazing job of attracting passionate (and civilized) users. I hope it can continue that #sustainable growth!

@supermjr @jerry

Twitter still appeals to me because of it's conflicts. I'm always a little cautious when the rules of the game set the tone, but "be excellent" on nerd culture is of course adorable.

@fomm There's entertainment to be found in a Colosseum... but not everyone wants to spill first blood as a gladiator. Or, more broadly, doesn't want every interaction to happen in a Colosseum.

@supermjr

Without a culture of debate, our democracy would not exist.

What I meant specifically is cybernetics & critical thinking and the communicative exchange, which should please gladly go to the limits of one's own point of view.

Of course, civilized communication is the basis of everything. And not everyone can (or wants to) start or lead a conflict - sure, totally understandable.

@fomm productive conflict and healthy confrontation can lead to the creation of value and positive outcomes, but it is easy to slide into taking the other guy down a notch. In a townsquare you build up, and in a Colosseum you cut down. Twitter has turned into more Colosseum than townsquare. The discourse here is much higher quality for me.
@supermjr thanks. I am very impressed by the crowd that has gathered. So many very smart people sharing ideas. I really love seeing it. I hope it, in some small way, helps in our battle against the baddies.
@jerry interesting….how did you get this data? Is there a toolset to get this?
@tchambers @jerry Curious, I see some rank/stats within my instance but i think that's only ranking on the "universe it knows" not the entire fediverse.
@tchambers I’ve been using this: https://instances.social/list/advanced#lang=&allowed=&prohibited=&min-users=&max-users=

@jerry Wow that really gives me perspective. Also dispels my worries about scalability a bit πŸ˜…
@jerry we may be small but we’re heavy and dense. Wait …
@Adman that’s going to be our tag line
@jerry It's because the stuff here is organic and not forced. also, we're pretty big fuckin nerds. nerdier than the average nerd, i would dare say!
@jerry I’ve had too many martinis and carbs to even process this. Thanks?
@Leeloo_1313 🍸all good! I hope you’re well
@jerry Don’t make me come over there, Jerry.
@jerry Interesting stat - tbh I kinda like the niche / boutique feel here …very 90s BBS (meant as a sincere compliment). Wondering if any staffing / budget parallels ..recent enterprise security program exercise and search for third party stats revealed average CIO IT budget = 10% of Corporate Budget. Avg CISO budget = 10% of CIO budget or 1% of Corp Budget.
