Who out there can give good tips as to how to best utilize the features of this universe? It’s strange and unwieldy to me. Thanks to those of you who’ve migrated here to follow me. As I said on Twitter, I’m not ceding that ground (yet) but I wanted to try cultivating a new spot here as well.

@albinokid

Tip 1: Use hashtags. There's no algorithm to suggest followers or shove posts into your feed in the hopes you follow someone.

Tip 2: Boost (re-post) toots liberally. *You* are the algorithm.

Tip 3: Use CW (content warnings / content wrappers) to discuss politics, the meta.

Tip 4: To create "threads", make the first post public and each reply "unlisted" to prevent clogging up your instance's feed.

Tip 5: Provide text descriptions, even just basic ones, when attaching photos or media.

Tip 6: Use the "report" features for moderating trolls so your admins can take action.

@tamitha Does the "report" feature only reports to my instance's mod team or does it reports to other instances too (like the author's or instances that are associated with mine)?
@JulienDelpierre @tamitha It's at least reported to the mods of your instance, and you can also elect to send the report to the mods of the other person's instance.
You can try to report someone (without going to the end of the process of course) to look at these options :)
@slasherfun Yes it's pretty nice. I had the "chance" to try the feature yesterday (see the replies to my introduction message).
@JulienDelpierre This one? https://qoto.org/@JulienDelpierre/109298267233634682 I don't see any reply, so I guess "action has been taken" since?
Julien Delpierre (@[email protected])

Hello People! #introduction I am a Post-doc wrapping up its PhD at the Max-Plank Institute for Cell Biology and Genetics. I am currently working on #CellBiology, studying liver architecture establishment during mouse #development. #DevBio I mainly use microscopy and cell culture to understand how cells establish their polarity and contribute to overall tissue organization. I'm interested in #ImageAnalysis and always looking forward to learning more on this topic.

Qoto Mastodon
@slasherfun Yes, good then. It was just a random insult, not even funny, you're not missing anything.
@JulienDelpierre What a nice way to be welcomed here 😬
I hope it will remain a safe space for long, even it it requires transferring between instances if moderation on the one picked so far is inefficient...

@tamitha @albinokid

Great tips, Tamitha!

I also found that https://fedi.tips hosts a great Q&A on Fedirverse and https://fedi.directory is a good way to find other accounts to follow by topics.

Welcome!

Fedi.Tips – An Unofficial Guide to Mastodon and the Fediverse

An unofficial guide to using Mastodon and the Fediverse

@tamitha @albinokid @Em0nM4stodon thanks for the tips! Those of us who primarily used the β€œbirdsite” definitely need to know the etiquette here!
@tamitha @albinokid why can't I see who people I'm following (or follow me) follow? I can see the count but that's it.
@jaxPYL if you want to see a follower’s following, or who they follow, go to their profile (accessed through their profile icon) and hit the appropriate link for the list.
@jaxPYL @tamitha @albinokid The technical reason for that is federation. Your server knows that you follow someone (and perhaps that they follow you too), but only their server knows the complete list of who they are following (and who follows them).

@pkraus @tamitha @albinokid

Was wondering that. So there is no way for me to find out who other people are following of they're on a different server? Have friends on a different one because no room for me and I'm trying to rebuild my circle. 😫

@jaxPYL @tamitha @albinokid
You click on their profile on the web, click on the "Following", and either the whole list appears, or you will see a message that says "Follows from other servers are not displayed. Browse more on the original profile" with the last part being a link...
@tamitha @albinokid Thank you for this. There are some important behaviours to align to here, especially for ex-Twitter people. Content Warnings are going to have a huge impact on positive user experience here.
@tamitha @albinokid In addition: don’t dump screenshots of tweets/toots/bits of a blog if you can link to the source; reading text from an image is not as accessible as just reading text.
@max @tamitha @albinokid I used to do this with links, and also quote tweets, but I gather this latter thing is not possible here. Is there an alternatieve?

@ADHD_Cyborg @tamitha @max @albinokid no. Not that I’m aware of. Quote Tweets became a facilitator of hate on Twitter. Someone sees something stupid and jumps on the bandwagon QTing it with even more venom than the original poster.

Not everybody but enough to make them something to avoid.

Instead Mastodon is focused on sharing original ideas and opinion via your own posts and boosting the posts of others without adding opinion.

@del @ADHD_Cyborg @tamitha @max I understand and appreciate that quote tweets sometimes turned into a tool for hate and ridicule. I tended to use them a lot to amplify voices and subjects that I wanted to highlight. I appreciated the opportunity to add context via quote tweets.

@albinokid @tamitha @max @ADHD_Cyborg Fair. Context is important. I wonder how best to facilitate that here.

Welcome to Mastodon btw. Love your work on Discovery.

@tamitha @albinokid Thank you so much - I am really appreciating all the various instances providing advice - slowly learning how to respectfully and effectively operate here.

@tamitha @albinokid

How do I do 4?

@mkarliner @tamitha @albinokid
I believe it's by clicking on the "Change post privacy" icon and selecting "Unlisted" Not sure about that (I'm still a #MastodonRookie). As a matter of fact, testing it with this reply.

@mkarliner @tamitha @albinokid

Meant to add a screenshot

@CitizenSly @mkarliner @tamitha @albinokid thanks really helpful 😊
@catblack You're welcome. Glad to be of service πŸ˜€ .

@mkarliner @tamitha @albinokid

Not sure if I did that correctly. Let me know.

@CitizenSly @tamitha @albinokid

Quite the existential question. If it works, nothing will happen. Anyway, I found the option. It appears to have worked in that this reply has the option set.
Thank you muchly

@mkarliner
No worries. Glad I could help out.

@tamitha @albinokid

Thanks, some useful tips there

@tamitha @albinokid That sounds like really useful information - wish I understood more of it
@tamitha How do you make a reply 'unlisted' ?
@tamitha @albinokid #Mastodon tip #4 is a new one for me. I will try it out since I have had some massive threads.
@tamitha @albinokid
Thank you. Tip 4 looks particularly important for super-threaders @DreadShips πŸ˜‰
@tamitha @albinokid And did I read that use CW instead of b*tchering your text means that filters can work better?
@tamitha please forgive if this seems a silly question but re tip 3 - what do you mean when you refer to ."the meta"? I can think of a couple of possibilities but neither seem relevant in the context of CWs
@tamitha @albinokid oh wow thanks so much for 4 I had no idea & need to work out how to do that in my UI!
@tamitha @albinokid this is a brilliant post. Thank you.
@tamitha @albinokid excellent advice! Thank you for posting
@tamitha @albinokid - Thanks. That was very useful
@tamitha @albinokid is there a way to see what other people post in reply...I am not sure if that is possible here

@tamitha @albinokid

I'm trying to wrap my head around the content wrappers that aren't really warnings and the use case there.

I'm seeing them for walking, cities, trains, etc. Are people expecting them for the broad definition of politics which is basically everything? I'm not trying to judge that, I'm honestly just confused.

It feels like that will desensitize people to the use of the feature when it actually needs a warning?

@tamitha @albinokid Thanks for this! Any good idea about how to emulate something akin to twttr's 'quote' function?
@tamitha @albinokid hello. I didn't understand why publishing the second and plus messages of a thread as unlisted actually avoid clogging the instance. Would you please explain le? Thank you veeeery much

@PoisChiche @tamitha @albinokid Only the first post of the thread will be displayed and boosted on the local notification list. Otherwise each individual toot of the thread will pop up in the list. This is actually a pretty clever trick.

I was just lost at first because unlisted is not an option on the official iOS client. So I guess I'll rather use the webapp until I find a client that implement all mastodon features.
