Lots of Mastodon instances are struggling with the heavy influx of users. Twitter was the same in the early days. The Fail Whale, was something you’d see on a regular basis. Gives it a chance, things will get better.
@omar ... and help your instance grow. See the #about pages on your instance. πŸ˜‰
@omar I had forgotten all about the fail whale.
@SLATED I have fond memories of refreshing Twitter, probably making the problem worse by generating more traffic.
@omar Those simple days, and your modem sounded like something from Back to the Future while it connected πŸ˜‰
@omar people can also find smaller instances and support them as well.
@omar the image is cute
@omar Heh, lots of little Dumbos would be great, even if it would attract the ire of The Mouse Lawyers.
@omar This is the Mastodon't ...lol
@omar I don't think the picture is appropriate though, shouldn't that be multiple mastodons lifting something else? Or the admins lifting the mastodon? The birds are out of place.
@omar I loved the fail whale.
@NatDoig they were a friend to us all, bringing a smile to our darkest moments. Or something…
@omar So true. Been on there since very early on and it was a mess all the time.
@omar oh boy, I’d almost forgotten about the Fail Whale #nostalgia
@omar I'm dubbing it a "pachyderm panic" :)
@omar so is this a failephant?
@omar There's pleroma which has better performance, but migrate might be painful for bigger servers.
@omar I forgot about the Fail Whale πŸ₯Ή
@omar toot.cat is a great one and it has an awesome name
@omar The Fail Whale! I’d forgotten about that!!
@omar so far I do enjoy the community so I can't wait to see this platform expand
@omar maybe this would be a better image for when Mastodon is struggling under user load?
@omar I think as more federated "little" servers come on (I'm in the middle of setting a friends-and-family one up) it'll get a lot easier and better.
@pedrosanta @omar ah I’m too young to know or not enough of an internet veteran
@omar omg I'd forgotten about fail whale
@omar I remember well the fail whale!! Lol
@omar Yeah, but Twitter has a company with employees who work to improve it. Mastodon team is one dev. The servers are just random guys who keep them up for free (or subscriptions). I don't see scaling happening fast. We will more likely see other protocols emerge (like @lensterxyz based on Lens protocol).
@alebaffa not just guys, lots of women and NB folk too.
@omar oh my...i used "guys" as gender neutral, but I probably it's only an American English connotation, not really British English.
@omar It must be hard task for people dedicating time to make things run smoothly. I just hope more of the good people I like come over. With having fast servers people we used to it’s shows how we adapted and can’t remember an a sluggish low performing platform
@omar watching the server owners talk through scaling in realtime shows people putting in 20hr days to make it better. I have a good feeling it'll work out soon.
@omar this is just the cutest picture! Should be the mascot for #mastodonmigration!
@omar My home instance had some brief downtime late last night, but they sorted it in roughly 10 minutes. No complaints!
@omar especially the email verifications seem to be swamped.
@omar Already much better this morning

@omar it's the maSTALLdont.

I'll see myself out... πŸ˜‚

@omar Honestly, the only issue I've had in the brief time so far is that images do seem to take a very long time to load but, in all honesty, that's pretty tame stuff.
@omar Agree it takes time for server instances to adjust to large spikes in traffic so don't be surprised to see the occasional 500 error as loads balance out. It will resolve in time. I am sure the poor server guys are worked off their feet at the moment. Probably just wanted to discuss what they did on a particular RTS last night and didn't expect all this.
@omar
I have no problems on my side of the fediverse.. 😊
The easiest solution is: Use smaller instances. It is not a must to register at the biggest sites (it's contraproductive even). It's not even a must to use mastodon (but that's on a different paper) πŸ™‚

@omar Thanks for the reminder and the great image!

You might want to add something about donations since money for beefier infrastructure needs to come from somewhere.

My biggest worry for Mastodon right now is that servers will start disappearing once admins can't pay for infra anymore or get overwhelmed, tired, etc.

@omar I wonder the difference between how Twitter and Mastodon improve given that the latter is decentralized. Observing ... πŸ‘€
@omar did you create that image or did you find it somewhere? I’d love to know the source!
@omar Yes dearest Mastodons, we Twits are very appreciative of the opportunity to participate on a platform that is not β€˜owned’ and now controlled by a dubious, wealthy person with a slightly over inflated ego. This former Twit is very appreciative for sure
@omar I think a lot of them are probably underpowered and it's straining their resources.
The other solution is: pay a small amount (if you can, or as much as you like) to your local podmin should they kindly ask to, that does help them too to keep up with the related work.
