Day #1 on Mastodon: "Help! Make it look like Twitter! Turn off the confusing advanced web interface!"

Day #4 on Mastodon: "I'm piloting the advanced web interface like Han Solo flies the Millennium Falcon!"

@Richard_Littler Doubt I’ll get there, but this is oddly heartening, thank you
@meemalee @Richard_Littler not a chance I’ll ever get there but what I can see so far looks reasonable. Maybe I have very low expectations.
@Richard_Littler it's like my time with Linux. Once I started to get hang of it, I push my envelope beyond and now able to comprehend almost everything it offers.
@fudgesiclesxd @Richard_Littler I said the other day that Mastodon is the Linux to Twitter's Windows and I felt so clever. It feels like the most apt description of the platform.
@Richard_Littler Love the advanced interface too 😂
@Richard_Littler I think the advanced interface is great. I wish I just could resize the columns, they look very narrow to me.
@Richard_Littler also depends on the UI. I tried original Mastodon. Tusky is fine for me
@Richard_Littler it's surprisingly easy to get used to
@Richard_Littler recommend Metatext for iOS if you want something that’s birdsite-esque
@Richard_Littler "Tooting through Mastodon ain't like dusting crops, boy!"
@Richard_Littler settled into advanced view quite nicely as was used to TweetDeck. Used that previously to get a chronological timeline, only problem was reading threads in reverse. Glad to see that posting norms fix there here.
@Richard_Littler I would love some suggestion on best apps for iOS, to navigate this millennium falcon.
@Richard_Littler seriously the single best discovery I've made in the last week. it's an epiphany
@Richard_Littler for real 😂 - the learning curve is there, but with some effort, it starts to make sense pretty quickly!
@Richard_Littler
It's pretty cool, isn't it?
@Richard_Littler what is the advanced web interface? I don’t see that option anywhere
@jenijm it's under preferences/appearance
@Richard_Littler thank you so much! Turns out I hadn’t been logged in properly so I couldn’t see all the settings options 🤦‍♀️
@Richard_Littler Hmm tried the advanced but realising I could only look at one column at a time I decided I might as well stick with the basic interface and just click the Local/Federated links when I want something different.
@Richard_Littler Screenshot of the advanced web interface please
@Richard_Littler
Let's hope that is true. I'm on day 1 and have no idea what I'm doing. trying to follow people that are on different servers gives me "errors" each time. sigh...
Did I create my ID in the wrong server?
@plotterdepot @Richard_Littler trying to navigate to the instance, it looks like an SSL issue?
@gabby @Richard_Littler
thanks, but I have no idea what the means? Do I need to do something?
migrate to a different server?
@plotterdepot @Richard_Littler I don't know anything about this particular server, but if you're having a bunch of issues with it and there's no way to get a hold of the admin, then I would leave.
@plotterdepot @Richard_Littler
I’m new too and how I found people is when I see someone I recognize, I look at their following list and click and follow. Like Kathy Griffin has a ton you can check out. I too have problems searching so found this the easiest way. Every day it gets a bit easier .. I hope lol
Hang in there Also this article might help https://www.wired.com/story/how-to-find-twitter-friends-on-mastodon/
How to Find Your Twitter Friends on Mastodon

If you're pondering a move to the decentralized social network, here's how to find the people you know and want to talk to.

WIRED
@yellowpaiges @Richard_Littler thanks for the info, I'll try it out...
@Richard_Littler I like it on my desktop but I turn it off on a tablet for readability. The flexibility is so appreciated.
@Richard_Littler still on phase #1 over here... but will get the hang of it soon... I think 😂
@Richard_Littler slowly finding my way around this, the android app seems to be slow and buggy though.
@Richard_Littler by asking chewy to do something?
@Richard_Littler I am at Day 4 and setting things up to migrate to a faster server.
@Richard_Littler I’ve been pleasantly surprised - the app actually looks better than twitter(!)
@Richard_Littler This made me laugh outloud. Thanks!
Is there any info on how to configure the Advanced Web Interface? I've enabled it but I don't see that I can do much with it.
@Richard_Littler Day #6 and you are contemplating setting up your own  server 😉
@Richard_Littler Try the App Metatext it looks like Twitter.
@Richard_Littler Great image! Yes! Advanced interface and pinning #'s made this so much more usable. The full speed local or federated feeds can be a bit much to process. # filters seem to move at a more manageable pace.
@Richard_Littler I kind of like the advanced UI. I’m slowly getting used to it.

@Richard_Littler

Ok, Chewy, how to I put up a banner in my profile? Just not finding that.

(See how small the migration problems really are? )

@Richard_Littler Smacking the side and letting Chewie do a lot of the legwork?
@Richard_Littler Have you seen the counter social dashboard? It's like advanced mastodon but with blinking lights, meters and news tickers. Tis a bit much for my taste...
@Richard_Littler I'm getting better...been too busy for much social media lately so I need a few more flight hours.
@Richard_Littler #Mastodon advanced web interface is the app that made the #Kesselrun in less than 12 parsecs.
@Richard_Littler Dang I have never seen a post with over 1k favorites.
@Richard_Littler you'll be compiling your own Linux kernel in days!
@Richard_Littler I've always found it's more like if Google Plus got a C Suite promotion and had to suddenly behave.
@Richard_Littler
You star. Because of you I discovered advance web interface. What a game changer
@Richard_Littler good to see you over here 😁
