Congratulations to Dr. Elizabeth Case. They successfully defended their Ph.D. dissertation in Glaciology on January 29th and will be a postdoc at the University of Utrecht.

I mentioned that Girls und Panzer is one of my top 5 favorite anime series currently. So I guess it’s worth listing my top ten favorites. Note that I make no guarantees about quality (edited)
1. RWBY (I know this fails some anime purity tests since it’s US made but whatever)
2. Violet Evergarden
3. Girls und Panzer
4. A Certain Scientific Railgun
5. Carol & Tuesday

7. Raven of the Inner Palace

This is really a sports anime with most of the tropes of sports shows — the school is at risk of shutting down and only the fame of winning the national tankery tournament will reverse course. The new kid is the one who takes over the inexperienced team and turns them into a bunch of winners. It’s very tropey but somehow it works. The tank battles are mostly great, if somewhat unrealistic (WW2 tanks normally didn’t fire while moving,for example).
I have come to unironically love Girls und Panzer. It’s probably among my top 5 favorite anime series. The weird combination of mock tank battles and slice-of-life high school shouldn’t work but somehow it does. It helps tha the tank models themselves are characters, and lovingly rendered in accurate detail. Here’s a trailer from the initial series. The ridiculous tone of the narration really sets the stage.
