Truth, Love & Light

Media Literacy and critical media consumption are important to our democracy. As a Journalism and media professor, it is my goal to help create critical media consumers and root out misinformation in the process. I will strive to help folks learn how to spot misinformation and how to live in a media climate based on misinformation but still remain in reality. I hope you will join me on this journey.

Any pundit who is criticizing Pres. Zelenskyy's attire is failing to read the room, but moreover, they're just completely missing the point.

A country and its leader under immediate and existential threats have no time for suits and neckties.

He has no visible rank or medals or nametapes or epaulets or brass buttons or starched creases. He's wearing what women and men who are fighting on the frontlines in Ukraine are wearing.

He's wearing the urgency of the moment.

That's the point.

I think the biggest thing about Mastodon that I'm enjoying is the normalizing of dialogue. Questions aren't dunks, they're inquiries to understand better. A perhaps not the best stated phrase is still taken with positive intent. And the atmosphere really does focus on uplifting voices, rather than finding the next target.

All of the above has exceptions, of course, but after all exceptions prove the rule.

Grateful for this growing Mastodon community. I appreciate you. ❤️✊🏽

*Sheepish request* I'm new to Mastodon, but a lot of my former Twitter followers don't know I'm here yet. Someone suggested I could simply ask you fine people to boost me. Would you be so kind? (I promise to post a photo of my dog to say thanks). #WelcomeToMastodon
All I’ve been thinking about this week with respect to Twitter is how many people seem to coming around to the radical idea that trusting capitalists to have your own personal interest in mind is actually a bad thing. There is nothing unusual about Musk. He’s behaving like virtually every white male with corporate power in history. Don’t get shocked. Get educated.
#introduction Retired journalist--CNN, ABC, AP et al-- and journalism educator--dean at South Carolina-- joining the great migration from Twitter. Difficult to accommodate Musk approach to speech and journalism. I keep an eye on politics, Supreme Court, foreign policy--especially toward Russia--and current evolution of journalism.
lol the rate of new account creation doubled in the last hour.
This is such an obvious point but it is so funny to me that Elon's free-speech crusade on Twitter lasted all of six weeks before he started indiscriminately banning reporters. Like what an all-time hilarious business story
Twitter is a land of free speech! So long as you don't say anything bad about the king.

Musk suspends journalists from Twitter, claims ‘assassination’ danger

Many of the journalists, including from The Washington Post and New York Times, had written about dramas surrounding billionaire Elon Musk's takeover of Twitter.

A must read: This harrowing account by ⁦@[email protected]⁩’s teenage daughter, of how she almost died while doctors inexplicably — and maddeningly — missed the signs of a perforated appendix https://www.cnn.com/2022/12/15/opinions/appendicitis-misdiagnosis-girls-tapper/index.html
