Woah - German government has got its own Mastodon instance and most of the ministries and many agencies already have accounts.
Verification problem at least partially solved - just need to check the domain is right!
I've also seen newspapers like theatlantic.com set up instances themselves. Looks like verification will be worked out sooner or later.

Unfortunately I mistook fedifinder's output of @theatlantic.com to mean they have an instance. I don't think they have one (yet) unfortunately but this is only a question of time I hope.

If you like Mastodon it'd be great if you supported their development with a modest donation like I've done.

There's no better way to annoy Elon than to bank roll an alternative to Elon

See this tweet for two ways of donating to Mastodon:

If you like what you're seeing here, why not donate a little bit to support Mastodon development? I've just donated a modest $10 myself through Open Collective: https://opencollective.com/mastodon Patreon is also available: https://www.patreon.com/mastodon Mastodon gGmbH is registered as a German non-profit, so if you want to donate substantial amounts, you should in theory be able to get a tax waiver - but first contact someone at Mastodon, e.g. @[email protected] Governance looks solid!

And look - MIT already has a gated instance. Anyone who's on mastodon.mit.edu is verified to have an MIT email. Neat isn't it?
https://mastodon.mit.edu/
mastodon.mit.edu

An instance for the extended MIT community. Run by volunteers at SIPB, MIT's computer club. NOT run or endorsed by the MIT administration.

@danhon Wrote a great piece about verification and instances, I really enjoyed it

Hmm, you can't quote toot/tweet on this platform, it said. That's a bit sad. I think that quoting adds a lot of value

@jorgenponder @corneliusroemer

True, but it has been on Twitter only since 2015 or so. I hope quote toots are coming sometime soon.

@alcinoe @corneliusroemer I thought about this some more, and you're even more pathetic than I initially thought. Shame on you.

@corneliusroemer

...<mumbles 'elitist shite' grumblegrumble>...

@corneliusroemer the "instance" you sign up to doesn't stop your mastodon experience.

You're being a fucking pathetic widdle ❄️

Did you tell the world when you weren't accepted to that university and cry about it?

Utterly pathetic...

@Brightdave @corneliusroemer seems like a strong reaction to a simple grumble. I agree in spirit with your response, but let's keep it civil here and not re-create all the garbage we left behind.

@mreider @corneliusroemer isn't insanely entitled bitching and whining about something exactly what we supposedly left behind too?

What he's wailing about is stunningly entitled bullshit!

@Brightdave now I am just confused. There was a comment (deleted maybe) from someone else saying this was too exclusive or something. But it seems maybe you believe @corneliusroemer is whining about something? There isn't a single complaint in his thread. It's pure positivity.

@mreider @corneliusroemer it's been deleted. He was pointing out he wasn't able to sign up for a specific university "instance" because he didn't go there.

Not being able to sign up to that specific instance has literally ZERO impact on him interacting with those on it, on him following those folks, on them interacting with him...

All he was doing was crying about something that has literally ZERO negative impacts on his experience here or anywhere.

I like the guy, I was really embarrassed

@Brightdave @corneliusroemer I think you misunderstood something.

@argo @corneliusroemer no, I didn't.

Care to correct me?

@Brightdave @corneliusroemer I can't, since you already know you didn't misunderstood anything. 🤷

Whatever, I just can't make sense about your reaction, which made me presume there's a misunderstanding.

But if there isn't, I probably have been mistaken and this was just a test case for my blocklist.

@Brightdave well the point the OP was making was about verification of Mastodon users. Eg. person X claims to speak from authority as a prof at MIT. And if they’re on the MIT instance you can be at least sure they’re at MIT, because they have to have an email to use the instance. He was saying this is a good development because gated instances can offer authoritative verification to those who need it.
@corneliusroemer gated? So they didn't implement ActivityPub? o.O Why call it an instance if they are gated from the Fediverse? O.o
@eest9 @corneliusroemer No, it's just that not everyone can create an account
@eest9 @corneliusroemer I think with "gated", he meant that only confirmed ministries and officials can sign up there, not that they don't federate.

@corneliusroemer

if you look at @mastodon the latest there is that they were planning to shut down, for want of admin help

@idlestate @corneliusroemer @mastodon it's still online! we have new maintainers now

@corneliusroemer This is nice, but the problem is that you can't easily move your historical posts with you when you migrate servers.

I can imagine that can cause issues/force retention when people would rather leave.

@profpieters Your historical posts still stay up on the old instance - it should also be possible to repost all the old posts in an unlisted way - then the date and likes/rt would be lost but at least the content would be preserved.
Also, as long as the old instance is still up the posts live on there.
@corneliusroemer @profpieters Wouldn't it be better in this case to remember the Adenauer quote "Don't remind me of the foolish things I said yesterday" 😉

@corneliusroemer Milestone? Tipping point?

Not sure what to call it but this might be bigger than the EU creating its own instance.

@corneliusroemer not sure about this. I guess you can switch to a different verified server if you, for example, switch companies or academic institutions.
@DeeDeeBaldwin I wonder whether we could get ITS interested in working with the library to establsih something like this?
@corneliusroemer Thanks for sharing. I guess this is the obvious route for academic institutions to go.
@corneliusroemer remember you can edit your toots to remove any incorrect info
@thatdosbox I can? Through delete&redraft?

@corneliusroemer there should be an Edit option from the three-dot menu

(edit) this is on the website, so it might not be available on whatever app you're using

@thatdosbox Hmm, I don't have this option on mastodon v3.5.3
This may come with v4? I think you're getting v4rc2 or something on your instance. Oh well, it'll come at some point.
@corneliusroemer v4 is currently in beta testing - I have been told to expect it to be rolled out further in late November (or possibly early December given how busy admins are at the moment)

@corneliusroemer No, this is correct. They do have an instance, on which only government agencies can get an account (so not for regular civilians). This does indeed solve verification, since it is now done through the SSL certificate, which is basically as good as trust gets on the internet.

They have had this instance long before the Musk craze, at least 2 years or so I think now.

@corneliusroemer Does TheAtlantic itself have a feed?
@corneliusroemer Seems like a good solution. Not just for verification, but also to keep local timelines free from business postings!
@corneliusroemer orgs that validate need to be open and transparent about their validation criteria and methodology
@corneliusroemer really amazing news to hear that newspapers are setting up their own instances too. This was my dream for the fedi, that it will be just like ISPs on the internet. any social interaction can go to a common protocol and unite all sites on the net.
@stemid @corneliusroemer and if you need the interaction to be secure, use Matrix for that. #MyDream
@corneliusroemer When you look at the numbers, German #Fediverse has a lot of existing users. It will be interesting how we can interact with them. I saw in the latest release that language translation will be supported natively, and it will be fun to interact with them!

@supertran @corneliusroemer
In the meantime: Some of us also speak English 😉

Good morning from the German #Feediverse!

@corneliusroemer this is kind of wild, and awesome
@corneliusroemer I think every governemntal body, national and state/local should be required to also have their own Mastodon/Fediverse instances... Our taxpayer money should support the common good...not only benefiting private commercial social media networks...
@corneliusroemer this is what we need for *every* government. All. Of. Them.
@corneliusroemer There will undoubtedly be look-alike domains used, but that's something that can be blocked at the server level. This is the Correct way to do promotion and interaction.
@corneliusroemer I predicted this form of verification would happen once the bird site exodus picked up momentum. We'll likely see several of the major news orgs setting up their own servers in the next week.
