📢 We're excited to introduce Pathoplexus, a specialized sequence database for human viral pathogens! 🌍 🧬
Launching with 4 viruses, http://Pathoplexus.org combines modern open-source software with transparent governance to improve global pathogen sequence sharing.

Pathoplexus | Home

Pathoplexus is a new, open-source database dedicated to the efficient sharing of human viral pathogen genomic data, fostering global collaboration and public health response.

Based on their prevalence and rate of growth, we've designated 3 new Nextstrain clades from @PangoNetwork lineages:
23G (XBB.1.5.70)
23H (HK.3)
23I (BA.2.86)

Two weeks ago, @jbloom_lab and I have revised and extended our preprint on fitness effects of most mutations in the SARS-CoV-genome.

We added an analysis of fitness costs of synonymous of non-coding mutations.

The thing about Twitter is that it really lacks a lot of the features you'd expect from a true Mastodon replacement.

For example, there's no way to edit your toots (which they, confusingly call "tweets"—let's face it, it's a bit of a silly name that's difficult to take seriously).

"Tweets" can't be covered by a content warning. There's no way to let the poster know you like their tweet without also sharing it, and no bookmark feature.

There's no way to set up your own instance, and you're basically stuck on a single instance of Twitter. That means there's no community moderators you can reach out to to quickly resolve issues. Also, you can't de-federate instances with a lot of problematic content.

It also doesn't Integrate with other fediverse platforms, and I couldn't find the option to turn the ads off.

Really, Twitter has made a good start, but it will need to add a lot of additional features before it gets to the point where it becomes a true Mastodon replacement for most users.

#twitter #mastodon #twittermigration @fediverse

Never thought Elon Musk would do so much for the adoption of a decentralised infrastructure…

Please Elon, can you buy Elsevier ?

Having been here since 2016, I can tell you there is definitely no such thing as a consensus on usage of content warnings on the fediverse. It's a decentralized network that doesn't belong to any one party, so by definition there is no single culture on it. Different corners have different expectations and customs.

✨ A new release candidate for Mastodon 4.0 is now available for testing! We are planning to release the stable on Monday, along with some important security fixes. Stay tuned!

Ok, I am doing another quick "how to". How do you import the accounts you follow onto the fediverse? It is not complicated. Three steps

Step 1: add your fediverse mastodoon handle into your twitter account. #Twitter clamped down on that. Nowadays you can simply #tweet your handle and pin that #tweet to your profile Why you should do this? This way you are discoverable to other mastadoon/fediverse users.

You will see in my profile this blue tick. This is a joke, you can just do that manually, I ll show how. The actual verification is the fact that there are three URLs to public profiles: my Warwick University profile and my personal website that I manage and pay for myself. You will see this appears green in my case. This is what it means to be "verified". Somebody who is prominent on the bird who is NOT verified is @davidallengreen

So how do you get verified?

🎉http://CoVariants.org Update!🎉

22F (XBB) is now available on #CoVariants! It's visible as part of Per Country & Per Variant plots, on the shared mutation page - and of course, has a page of its own.
