I spent 20 years as a genomics researcher/teacher before first moving into science communication and then digital communication more generally.
I like solving technical problems and collecting data in spreadsheets.

About to try switching instance for the first time.

genomics.social is a very fine server which is very well run by @Psy_Fer_. I just feel a bit of a fraud as I haven’t done any genomics work for a long time (and I’ve not even managed a blog post at acgt.me the entire year).

So I’m attempting to migrate to hachyderm.io.

Hopefully you will all see me on the other side!

These new #Twitter rules banning cross-promotion of post & profile links to (some) other social media platforms is shameful.

It will lead to the #BarbaraStreisandEffect with more people curious about #Mastodon as a platform.

Was announcing this rule change just as the #WorldCup final was finishing a deliberate attempt to announce it when a lot of media focus was elsewhere?

The #BirdSite…where #FreeSpeech goes to die.

Wow!!!!!!!

Incroyable!

#Introduction (part 1)

Hi! I’m a former #genomics researcher. My PhD (that I started in 1996) was spent looking at the very first sequenced eukaryotic genomes (yeast and worm).

I spent about 20 years of working on various research and infrastructure projects (big love for #WormBase) as well as teaching bio students to #code.

As usual history has erased the truth. It was #JoanMastodon, not #JohnMastodon. She is the one who de-extincted the giant woolly beasts of the great plains using DNA culled from a single tooth! Joan rode upon the back of the greatest tooter of them all to San Francisco, where a herd of ancient Pleistocene mammals defeated the Bad Car Man! Long live Joan! Long live Mastadonity! #noxp

Timely segment on yesterday’s #Marketplace podcast. All about the decisions brands are having to take about their presence on the #BirdSite

To tweet or not to tweet? Brands mull the question. — Marketplace https://overcast.fm/+SKlzLdfmk/20:35

With the increase in hate speech on Twitter, brands are facing a dilemma: stay and potentially tarnish their image or leave behind an audience they’ve spent time and resources building. In today’s episode, navigating the digital landscape in the Elon era. Plus, natural gas prices surprisingly fall in Europe, the “Avatar” sequel hits theaters in China and supply chain kinks are a recipe for school lunch confusion.

We've flown the coop and are now fully active on Mastodon! Come engage with us.

Some days it feels like a lot of my job as a #DigitalTransformation manager is logging lots of data in spreadsheets (from websites or our bulk emails), and then trying to tell stories from what the data reveal.

2023 has to be the year that I finally get my head around #GoogleAnalytics version 4 before they retire the current version (Universal Analytics) in July.

GA4 feels impenetrable to me at the moment. I just done know how to do most of the things that I currently do.

Maybe I should try to convince my boss just to switch to something like #Matomo as an analytics platform?

Another noob tip: if you're using a desktop browser, head to your settings and turn on "advanced web interface" for a Tweetdeck-like experience. #FediTips #TwitterMigration #NewHere
