Anyone from #Vancouver follow me? The musicians of the #VSO are on strike, and the org is fucking around. I'm sending the following message to the President and CEO of the VSO, which has been failing to negotiate with its musicians and failing to give adequate notice of concert cancellation to its audience and guest stars. Dear Angela Elster,
I don't believe we've been introduced, so let me begin by noting that I am a recurring patron of the VSO.  I have bought one or more full packages for years, both before and after the pandemic.  I am not a donor, as I am sure you are already aware, and that might seem to dilute the importance of my message.  However, I am a younger member of your audience, and a passionate music lover who buys tickets for my friends, which should make me part of the future of the VSO.

I am writing today to express my unwavering support for the musicians of the VSO and their strike.  I am appalled to hear that VSO management hasn't been negotiating with the union and that management has given audiences and guest stars the least notice possible when canceling concerts impacted by the strike action.  This says to me that VSO management doesn't prioritize the skills and investment of their performers and guest stars (who flew here for the performance to be canceled after they arrived!) or the time and devotion of their audiences.  It also says that management is hoping to create a PR problem for the strikers.  I and many others in your audience are not fooled.  You have the power to correct this, to handle the situation professionally, and to negotiate with your musicians with honesty and grace.  I am asking you to do that.

Arts organizations should not be extracting value from their performers and their audience; they should be organized, both practically and economically, toward supporting their performers and showcasing their incredible skill and passion to audiences who are excited to have the opportunity to experience live music.

Today’s Agenda

So Robert, what’s the plan for this fine December Saturday?

Oh nothing…

First I pick up the antibiotic cream stuff that was prescribed for the mess that is my left eye (ouch). Then I put some clothes in a backpack and maybe some gas in the car and maybe pack up some protein bars and snacks and water bottles. You know, like you do.

Then Jen and I hop into the car and mosey on up to New Hampshire to pick up my mother in law. Then we mosey on over to Vermont to meet up with the kids.

Then, later tonight, it’s nothing special. We just go to see my step daughter, Bellana, perform with the Vermont Symphony Orchestra again. They are doing a string of holiday shows this weekend and tonight’s the night for us. She’s in the chorus. You know, the Vermont Symphony Orchestra Chorus. Nothing special.

I mean… is your step daughter in the Vermont Symphony Orchestra Chorus? No? Oh. Groovy.
