Fall Break – Sognefjellsvegen

Sognefjellsvegen, the highest mountain pass in Northern Europe, happens to begin in a town called Gaupne in Luster, Norway, right in the vicinity of where we stayed for a week last autumn,

This narrow, two-lane highway (a National Tourist Route) travels inland from Lusterfjorden at the village of Skjolden, winds and climbs up towards Galdhøpiggen, the highest mountain in Norway, past views of the Fanaråken glacier, and then down, down, down again, finally ending at the town of Lom. Along the way are rest areas-cum-view points worth stopping at — sometimes for the use of one of the architecturally interestingly cool, clean, modern toilets that have been built up along the National Tourist Routes in Norway.

We drove parts of Sognefjellsvegen during our stay and then drove it the entire way to Lom and beyond as we made our way back home to Oslo at the end of our stay. Here are some images taken along the way.

Looking down at the town of Fortun (find the white church) as the road begins to climb a bunch of switchbacks Grazing sheep in some fields as we climb past some mountain farms Weather-worn buildings on one of the farms Some fall colors and a wee bit of falling water Looking in one direction from the Nedre Oscarshaug viewpoint Skautefossen, near the Turtagro Hotel Another direction, another view at Nedre Oscarshaug More little waterfalls: they’re everywhere My better half standing and looking at the view, snapped from my vantage point at Nedre Oscarshaug A bit further up the mountain from Nedre Oscarshaug (Nedre means lower) is this rest stop called Oscarshaug that I happily patronised A large cairn at the Mefjelet viewpoint This sculpture, by Knut Wold, can be used to frame the Fanaråken glacier by snap-happy tourists like me A closer look at Fanaråken glacier Heading down the mountain but still above the tree line I noted this tumbledown ruin the very first time I traveled this road long ago — I can’t believe it is still upright A little waterfall cascading down towards the Bøvra river as we near the town of Lom #Glacier #Mountains #NationalTouristRoute #Norway #Photoblog #Photography #RoadTrip #Sognefjellsvegen #Travel

I just scored Beaver Nuggets like it’s 1997 and I still trust gas station snacks without reading labels. If you know, you know. I’m not sharing. Survival of the fastest hands. Childhood me is proud. Adult me accepts the consequences. #snacks #nostalgia #genx #food #roadtrip
