My mom has had her #VascularDementia diagnosis 2 weeks and is in the 'We do not talk about this, but here are family heirlooms' stage.

I'm very glad my marriage is getting better because without my husband right now, I wouldn't have anyone to talk to about this who already knows my relationship with my mom.

Productive thing: Got contact started with 2 of my moms best friends and her sister for updates/care. #VascularDementia

Fun thing: Played a little of my 3rd playthrough of Dragon Age. I'm on Inquisition, and making different choices. Playing a bloke so I can snog the seeker.

Since my mom refuses to discuss a plan, my husband and I are planning without her, and we are becoming... devious. At the next neurologist appointment, I will be asking her doctor about a therapist referral (she doesn't need him to write one. She is not willing. I'm tattling in a way I don't get into too much trouble), and I'm going to ask HIM what steps we should take next. Since she refuses to discuss that, too. I want to discuss it because she is going to have to live with us and it's better to do this while she still has a say.

Now, I just have to find an affordable place to live. Accessible apts are TOUGH to find. I want a head start.

Finding the Right Words by Cindy Weinstein and Dr. Bruce Miller

Finding the Right Words is an invaluable guide for families dealing with a life-changing diagnosis. In chapters of profound and sometimes humorous remembrance, Weinstein relies on literature to describe the shock of her father's diagnosis and his loss of language and identity. Writing in response to Weinstein's deeply personal narrative, Dr. Miller describes the neurological processes responsible for the symptoms displayed by her father.

It is #AmericanHeartMonth. We all know that taking care of your heart is so important but did you know that doing so also takes care of your #brain? I had never heard of #VascularDementia until studying #neurology at #UCSF.

Vascular Dementia

Memory and Aging Center

February is #AmericanHeartMonth. It's important to know that taking care of your #heart is also taking care of your #brain. According to the #Alzheimer'sAssociation, somewhere between 5 and 10% (this % varies significantly depending on the study) of people with #dementia have what is known as #VascularDementia, a brain #disease that falls under the #dementia umbrella.

Who gets vascular dementia?

There are many things that increase a person’s chances of developing vascular dementia. These are called ‘risk factors’. It is possible to avoid some risk factors, while others cannot be controlled.

2040: estimate of ~12 million in the US w/dementia

Dementia is the umbrella term. The "other diseases" include #FTD (FrontoTemporalDementia), #CTE (repeated concussions), #VascularDementia, #LewyBodies, Creutzfeldt-Jakob, #Alzheimer's, #early-onset Alzheimer's & more.

Let's revisit (& pass) #Biden's plan to support financially #caregivers, who often die before the person w/dementia for whom they are caring. Then what?

The dementia crisis is here. Better training can’t wait.

As more and more elderly Americans with dementia reside in assisted-living homes, states need to make sure they receive high-quality care.
