Forest mosses can bio-accumulate pollutants such as mercury, but we found the lowest mercury content in mosses relative to the other ground surface substrates (mercury concentration was 4-times greater in litter, and 6-times greater in soil than in moss). Yet, tree seedling mercury levels were low and independent of the substrate, and a little lower in forest gaps, reflecting the foliar uptake of mercury.

Attached: 1 image 📣 New paper! Canopy #gaps are known to affect #forest dynamics, but did you know that #moss layer may be as important? Monica Berdugo, former PhD student in our lab (now a postdoc @Univ.Marburg), shows that tree seedlings on moss layer had (i) greater density, (ii) lower physiological stress, & (iii) higher potential to recruit into larger size classes than those grown on litter. Thanks to Robin Wall Kimmerer & Charley Driscoll for the help with this neat study! https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10021-022-00806-0

Busy Friday! Congratulations to Jordon Tourville for an excellent PhD capstone seminar & defense. Jordon studied how biotic interactions affect tree range shifts under changing climate along montane elevational gradients. His first paper is here:

As it is getting hotter have to stay on top of watering. Watered over 50L in my greenhouse today.
Thankfully only have lost a few plants to drying out, and also thankfully my rain barrels were replenished yesterday due to a good rain.

Two heartnut and a pawpaw sprout from late June.
Pawpaws will only sprout in warm temperatures as it turns out, so I have put my pawpaw sprouting bag in a food dehydrator with a thermometer to keep the temperatures in the 25C to 30C zone. It did work as I got the sprout you can see. It turns out the heartnuts are also summer sprouters so I may try the same thing with them.

Indeed next year if sprouting them in the food dehydrator works then I will try to get them to sprout in March or April, so that I can have marketable seedlings by the summer.

As it is if they sprout in the summer, then usually they will only be marketable at earliest in the autumn, though more likely next year.

Their behaviour of sprouting in the warm months is to avoid any risk of frost. However there is no risk of frost in my greenhouse so they should be just fine in there.

I am very grateful to have some heartnut sprouts, as I thought perhaps they had all died on me, but perhaps they are simply late sprouters. Anyhow the germination rate for them is up from 0% to 2%.

There is so much to learn with growing trees!

Made new product images to help with online sales. Most feature an example of the nut they produce. The apricots, plums and peaches though do not, as they are not in season right now. But will have to take pics later of twe parent when they are in season so can have them for next year.

Good news, pecans have survived a particularly cold winter in Owen Sound, hardiness zone 5b ish.
My butterfly bushes didn't make it this year though they had several previous years. So is how I know it was especially cold.
Anyhow can get the same ultra northern hardy pecan seeds this autumn and grow them to sell at the market next year. Am sure they will be a big hit, people love pecans.
