Second scarlet runner bean harvest of the year.

The small beans are from the front yard, based on north american scarlet bean genetics bred for flowers. The large beans are from the backyard and based on european scarlet bean genetics bred for food.

There are still a bunch more green pods, hopefully will ripen before the killing frosts.

12 beans harvested this year in total. Still hoping to get up over 30, which is how many were planted. Many did not succeed, have about 3 out of 30 bean plants that produced pods able to reach maturity. So the plants coming from these seeds should have much better production rates. Though will also save the tubers for replanting next year.

They say it can take 5 years to naturalize and learn to grow a crop effectively, certainly are on the way. Hopefully within next few years will be able to produce enough to have some for eating.

These ones were grown on sandy loam, but need to also grow them on silt/clay, as that is quite common around here.

#lyis yesterday planted
2 Osage Orange
1 Peach
1 Plum
3 Hazelnuts

May be done for the season.
I have 40 hazelnuts left,
a handful of swamp white oak and burr oak. some pine nuts that am going to overwinter, and a variety of annuals and perennials in the greenhouse as well.

I'm planning on donating at least some of the hazelnuts to Neighbourwoods North, a local tree planting association that plants at various locations in the city.
#lyis made a design for a farming tunic based on the kosovorotka vyshyvanka.
Made the design tri-lingual pyash-english-interslavic

6 desmanthus illionensis
4 swamp oak
6 peashrub
20 hazelnut

First Scarlet Runner Bean harvest of the year. Got five beans from two pods. These are classic scarlet runner variety.
Still have a bunch ripening on the vine. Am hoping to get at least 30 or 40 seeds so can end with at least as many as I started with.

It's still worth it if not so many, as I can still dig up the tubers in the autumn and replant after last frost. And the seeds that have matured are at least a little more naturalized than the other ones i had before.

I know many did not succeed due to insect pressure, or if they couldn't handle growing in a polyculture. Yet some got by unscathed. And it is the successful ones which produced flowers/pods/seeds.

#lyis I need a backpack sprayer, for spraying water during seed planting.
Carrying the seedlings and a gallon sprayer is unweildly.
#lyis planted 4 swamp oak, 6 red oak and 20 burr oak today.
#lyis today I planted the oak without adding fencing, cause at least in that area I've had very little damage to the oaks, even ones that didn't have fencing. I did use the fox urine granules, to hopefully help at least a little.
#lyis planted 6 red oak and 15 burr oak today
5 hazelnut shrubs will produce nuts equivalent to one oak tree, but will produce in 3-6 years instead of 20-30. So for many people it is worth it.
