@Snoro We have a 230 tree English Walnut grove that produced NOTHING this year. Conditions are getting incredibly unpredictable and are hampering pollination. Even wild native Black Walnuts that have produced every year for the last 22 years did not produce.

Hopefully next year is better but there is so much that is out of our control.

Hi all! Quick #introduction to pin. Been on masto since 2022, opened this account to focus on #HamRadio / #AmateurRadio. Studying for my Technicians license and creeping on the air to learn the ways of this very cool new world (and all your many many abbreviations lol). I’ve got an HT for the local mountaintop repeaters and a CC Skywave SSB for HF. I love it all so much. I grin every time I find a signal. Interests also include #TreeCrops, communitarian preparedness and other #collapse stuff. 🙂
When I was first planning and planting this homestead, ulu (breadfruit) was one of the first things that went in the ground. We've been eating home grown breadfruit for a couple years now, and this year, I've had enough to make vichyssoise for the farmer's market. It's a big hit. 🤤 Be resilient, not afraid. #climatechange #sustainability #farm #agriculture #trees #treecrops #homestead #food

Breadfruit Is Here to Save the World

This calorie-rich, nutrient-dense, and climate-resilient crop has the power to step in for more common staples that can’t handle global warming.

Tree Crops: A Permanent Agriculture by Wendell Berry, J. Russell Smith

New blog post introducing the New York Tree Crops Alliance (NYTCA), a nut growers #cooperative I work for and with: https://www.nytca.org/s/stories/introducing-the-new-york-tree-crops-alliance-2

I share some details about who our farmers are, what we are doing, and why.

TLDR version: #NYTCAisNuts about #TreeCrops like #Chestnuts and #Hazelnuts, and a whole lot more!

PERMACULTURE IDEAS FOR THE ANTHROPOCENE…
Could there ever be such a thing as bioregional agroforestry—a tree cropping systems producing food and useful materials that also has space for indigenous plant species and that is
adapted to regional climate and terrain?

Peter Hardwick thought so. I came across Peter’s idea while on a course at Robin Francis’ Djanbung Gardens permaculture education centre in Nimbin some years ago.

This is a brief introduction to Peter’s idea as it stood at the time. Let’s know what you think of his model and how you would adapt it to the region you call home.

Fifteen years ago I planted my first pecans, two grafted trees of cultivars said to be hardy. Both the trees died during their first winter but did send up suckers. I made one more attempt at planting different hardy cultivars but lost those as well. Not giving up on pecans I started to plant seedlings and the majority have proven to be winter hardy, my two oldest trees are growing nicely. #TreeCrops
Vermont’s climate is radically changing, we now have warmer summers and a longer growing season. Several years ago I starting planting #TreeCrops that historically been considered only productive well to the south. I’m having success getting both paw paws and persimmons to produce crops. These two fruit trees are native to North America and I believe very ornamental. Paw paw on the left, American Persimmon on the right.
