We recently moved into #DaylightSavingTime, so let's note that on #ThisDayInHistory in 1918 the US Congress passed a bill establishing time zones and time-changes. The zones originated with the railroad monopolies and daylight savings was meant to extend the work days in summer.

In an advance preview of the coming #FalklandsWar, on #ThisDayInHistory in 1982 #Argentina sent Marines, disguised as civilian scientists, to raise the Argentinian flag on #SouthGeorgiaIsland, a tiny British Antarctic dependency & research base. The war broke out two weeks later.

Tiny Caribbean island #Anguilla voted to reject federation with St Kitts or direct rule from London & expelled a British envoy. In response to hysterical reports of "Black power" radicals, on #ThisDayInHistory in 1969, the UK invaded its colony, finding only goats to oppose them.

#AlbertSpeer, running wartime production. ignored #Hitler's #NeroDecree, given #ThisDayInHistory in 1945 — an order to destroy all industries, shops, transport, & comms in #Germany, to deny use by the Allies, & because Hitler believed Germans let him down and deserved extinction.

The #CrossbarryAmbush, occurring #ThisDayInHistory in 1921, was one of the bigger battles of the #IrishWarOfIndependence. ~1200 British troops tried to surround 100 #IrishRepublicanArmy (#IRA) volunteers in #CountyCork but failed — 10 soldiers and three IRA fighters were killed.

The #HouseOfLords was effectively abolished during the #EnglishCivilWar due to a Commons act from #ThisDayInHistory in 1649. During the Restoration that was ignored, so the UK still has that ridiculous body — only now it's largely appointed, feeding partisan power & corruption.

Occupied during the #1967War, the Egyptian resort town #Taba in the eastern #Sinai was held until #ThisDayInHistory in 1989. Following the 1978 #CampDavidAccords, Israel tried dishonestly to claim maps were wrong & keep it. Arbitration denied this & it reverted to Egypt in 1989.

The #IraqWar was announced to the American people on #ThisDayInHistory in 2003 via a televised address by #GeorgeWBush. Despite all evidence showing them long destroyed, US insisted #Iraq had #WMDs and these somehow posed a threat. Unasked is why US, UK, and Israeli WMDs do not.

The #AlgerianWarOfIndependence ended on #ThisDayInHistory in 1962. A futile effort to retain #Algeria as an apartheid state within #France, the war claimed about a million Algerian lives, destroyed 8000 settlements, kept 2.1 million in #ConcentrationCamps, and normalized torture.

Western powers saw an opportunity when the #ArabSpring reached #Libya, since #Gaddafi predictably threatened great violence to maintain power. On #ThisDayInHistory in 2011, the UK, France, & US launched strikes that crippled his military, going far beyond the claimed #NoFlyZone.
