Senators Introduce Bill To Abolish Selective Service Military Draft Agency

“A bipartisan group of lawmakers unveiled legislation that would dismantle the government agency responsible for maintaining the military draft database of young, eligible men.“

“The bill — advanced by Senators Ron Wyden, D-Ore., Rand Paul, R-Ky., and Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo. — would phase out the Selective Service System, citing its annual operating cost of more than $31 million per year. The senators argued that the agency has been largely defunct since 1973, the last time the United States conducted conscription.

“The Selective Service is an outdated program that costs millions of taxpayer dollars to prepare for a military draft that Americans don’t want or need,” Wyden said in a statement. “Our volunteer military forces are the strongest in the world, and there is no need to replicate the same draft that sent two million unwilling young men to war 50 years ago.”

Paul, in a separate statement, added: “I’ve long stated that if a war is worth fighting, Congress will vote to declare it and people will volunteer. This outdated government program no longer serves a purpose and should be eliminated permanently.”

In its 2024 annual report, the SSS acknowledged a recent decline in registration rates, but noted that an automated registration provision could help bolster future enrollment levels.

Congress later incorporated the rule change into the fiscal year 2026 National Defense Authorization Act. The shift from a system of self-registration to automation is set to take effect in December, with noncompliance constituting a felony offense.

“This statutory change transfers responsibility for registration from individual men to SSS through integration with federal data sources,” according to its website. “SSS will implement the change by December 2026, resulting in a streamlined registration process and corresponding workforce realignment.”

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also drew scrutiny earlier this year when declining to rule out reviving the draft following the launch of Operation Epic Fury, saying that “President Trump wisely does not remove options off the table.”

Could the #SelectiveService System actually get anyone to the military induction points within 6 months? Probably not. Assume that the draft would only include the people who have been required to register: males between 18 and 26. Then imagine the lawsuits that would immediately get filed:

Equal protection claims based on discrimination of women,

First amendment claims for people opposed to war without a religious or moral basis,

Equal protection claims by transgender folks.

#draft #SelectiveService I'm not seeing much online about the automatic draft enrollment legislation just enacted. Very sobering for a person of my generation. We know there won't be many exemptions granted, and remember how the US lost so many grad students in what we now call STEM fields.

On December 18, 2025, #Felon47 signed the National Defense Authorization Act for 2026, mandating automatic Selective Service System registration. The agency’s proposal to automatically enroll men was then submitted to the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs on March 30.

The government official said they did not believe that the new Selective Service registration process was geared toward “generating cannon fodder”.

I have mixed thoughts concerning this.

In the United States, male citizens (and male immigrants) ages 18–25 are required to register with the Selective Service System, which is used in the event of a draft. The United States has not had a draft since 1973, at the end of the Vietnam War era.

Fun fact: I did not know this until well after I was 25 years old. No one ever informed me of this fact, which is ironic, since I actually tried to enlist in the reserves. You would think that would have automatically enrolled me in the Selective Service System, but ironically, it does not (I checked). I even somehow slipped through the cracks and started the initial initiation process. It was on the third day that my medical record was finally flagged (asthma), and I was given a polite but blunt talk about being brave for having even tried, but also to go home.

Having said that, today, knowing what we as a nation have now become and how everything is governed, I would not fight for this country and would have scolded my younger self for even trying. But I do remember thinking years later that the whole process should have been automatic, since I did not even know this was a requirement until I was over the age of 25.

Having said all this, I do believe this whole thing is absurd. We can automatically enroll you to fight for this country, but we refuse to automatically enroll you to vote.
