Nessun gruppo ha rivendicato la responsabilità degli attacchi, ma è stata subito attribuita al gruppo jihadista Boko Haram, che nel 2009 ha lanciato un’insurrezione nel nord-est della Nigeria per imporre la propria interpretazione radicale della legge islamica (Sharia).
