Gumi claims Abuja sources marked him for elimination

Story Highlights

Sheikh Ahmad Gumi alleges that security insiders in Abuja warned him of a plot to eliminate him alongside Boko Haram members. Speaking on Sunday, January 4, 2026, the cleric blamed the United States for Nigeria’s insecurity and accused political elites of using violence to divide the nation.

Gumi revealed that the anonymous caller reached out early in the morning to deliver the grim message. According to his account, the informant stated that authorities discussed his name during a high-level national security meeting.

The midnight warning

The caller reportedly warned the cleric that the government marked him for “elimination” alongside leaders of the Boko Haram terror group. Gumi questioned the logic of such a decision and challenged the definition of terrorism in Nigeria.

This allegation comes shortly after the scholar sparked outrage when he labels US terrorists following strikes on insurgent camps. The cleric insisted that foreign powers, particularly the United States, bear responsibility for the existence of groups like Boko Haram.

Gumi argued that the West brought violence to Nigeria through lies and oppressive policies. He specifically pointed to President Donald Trump, accusing his administration of deepening divisions within the country.

Blaming the elites

Sheikh Gumi did not spare Nigerian leaders and fellow scholars from his criticism. He accused the political class of remaining silent while foreign narratives falsely portrayed Christians as the only victims of the crisis.

The cleric stated that no sovereign country should accept interference designed to fracture its population. He challenged the government to either unite the people or hand them over entirely to foreign control.

Observers note that Gumi often courts controversy, recently making headlines when he calls kidnapping a lesser evil compared to military action. He maintains that dialogue remains the only viable path to peace.

Gumi concluded by warning that fear and elite indifference are dragging the nation down. The scholar lamented that citizens now face hardship and broken rights instead of genuine solutions to the ongoing conflict.

US Involvierung "Rettung"?
Unterschiedliche Strategien erforderlich!

#Luftangriffe können kurzfristige Hilfe leisten, aber

Some Nigerians view US involvement through “savior” lens. Nigeria’s #security challenges deeply complex, ranging from Islamic State-linked factions - emerged from #BokoHaram - in northeast to bandit groups like #Lakurawa in northwest, each requiring different strategies. Kidnapping business. Nigeria battling multiple armed groups nationwide.

While airstrikes may offer short-term relief -- unlikely to end violence.
