No pot of gold in the Tararua ranges this morning but plenty of rain heading over to the Taratahi plains of Wairarapa. It’s been dry for nearly a week, even got the paddock mown as the grass is starting to grow and engulf the daffodils. #rainbow #rain #Tararuas #Wairarapa #Aotearoa #NewZealand
Murky weather in the Tararua ranges. I wou want to be tramping there now. The dry rivers are flowing again over the alluvial gravels of the Taratahi plains. We are dodging occasional showers in Beau Vista orchard that spread over too. With the prevailing NE winds coming over the ranges we thankfully are in a rain shadow and don’t get all the rain Kapiti does. #Tararuas #wairarapa #taratahi #weather

MISSING TRAMPERS
(BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.)
MASTERTON, 5th March.
Mr. and Mrs. F. C. Brockett, members of the local #tramping club, left Levin last Friday on a tramp across the #Tararuas via the Ohau River and Dundas to Masterton. They are now over two days overdue. Search parties are being organised in the #Wairarapa and at Levin.

My favourite view in the Wairarapa plains, over Beau Bista orchard ( just out of sight) towards the Tararua ranges. Snow capped at present. The cold is really noticeable at present, see the frost on the grass. This pond was created to provide sanctuary for relocated native fish due to civil works nearby and is quite an attraction to birds and wildlife. #orchard #conservation #Aotearoa #NewZealand #Tararuas #wairarapa
_The Evening Post_, 16 June 1924:
            LOCAL AND GENERAL

It is hoped that this winter a hut will be provided near Table Top in the #Tararuas. The annual report of the Tararua Tramping Club states that although the track has been improved to a certain extent much yet remains to be done towards making the track more popular, and as the result of a deputation to the Minister of Public Works, the Government has approved of a straight-out grant of £105 [ca. $13,000 today] plus £75 [ca. $9,000] (£1 for £1) towards a hut at Table Top and £75 (£1 for £1) towards further track improvements.… it is hoped that before the winter is over this commodious hut will be available in the bush near Table Top. This will, besides providing ordinary track accommodation, prove a splendid starting point for winter sports parties.

_The Evening Post_, 26 Apr 1924:
LOCAL AND GENERAL

The #tramping track over the #Tararuas is shortly to be improved with an expenditure of between £500 and £400 [ca. $61,000 and $49,000 today] on the track and huts. A well-known member of Parliament has donated £100 [ca. $12,000 today] towards the fund, and the Government has made subsidies. A party from Carterton recently made the trip under Mr. J. W. Hodgson. There were a number of 13-year-old children in the party, but good progress was made in spite of bad weather. Pigs are reported to be fairly numerous on the ranges, while bellbirds are reported to be rapidly increasing. Pigeons and tuis are scarce.

Beautiful day in the #tararuas did most of totara flats along the #waiohine in the central #northisland of #newzealand
Just completed my first solo overnight tramp. 2 nights at Herepai hut. A teensy bit proud of my mild middle-aged self. Great for the soul and sole #aotearoa #nz #tramping #tararuas
