So two problems:

1. he may have been an athelete (cyclists/runner), which means... he could be 15 miles way.

2. I assume even AF generals went through SERE, and imagining he was not in a proper state of mind, very easy he could have deliberately (or unconsciously) been using SERE techniques to avoid detection (ie, avoid streets, avoid trails, avoid human activity, etc. etc.) Hide yourself from being spotted from the air, under trees/cover/rocks, in gullies, etc. etc. 😬

So, if he were suicidal or a memory patient the first within-walking distance areas I'd search are in red. (probably already searched, by air and ground, I bet). Looking East. There's just dense housing to the west, Assuming he were suicidal, and didn't walk to the nearest field, the only place to look is exactly where they are looking (in the hills). But, if he were walking away from home and deciding not to come back, there's a massive giant area of no man's land to the north with no homes, though you have to walk 2 miles through civilization to get there. #random #SearchAndRescue

**sounds like they want to find him, dead or alive, to make sure he was not kidnapped? πŸ€” (circumstances -- someone leaving from home, left cell phone behind, took personal firearm would lead to someone in personal crisis... but the guy's former high level position with the USAF -- would of course mean folks want to know if that really was the case or not).
