"Dopo questa tragedia sono almeno 725 i migranti che hanno perso la vita nel Mediterraneo centrale quest'anno, nonostante la diminuzione di arrivi", commenta l'agenzia delle Nazioni unite.
Così ricostruisce il dramma la Sea Watch, intervenuta sul posto con il velivolo Seabird 2: "Ieri, più di 70 persone sono scomparse in mare quando la loro barca si è capovolta. Solo 32 persone sono sopravvissute aggrappandosi ai rottami della loro barca finché una nave mercantile non li ha finalmente salvati", provenienti principalmente da Pakistan, Bangladesh ed Egitto. Il mezzo stava pattugliando il Mediterraneo, quando la ong tedesca ha appreso che un aereo della Marina francese stava sorvolando una nave in pericolo con persone in acqua: "Quando siamo arrivati, una scena terrificante: 15 persone aggrappate allo scafo di una grande barca di legno, diverse persone in acqua e diversi cadaveri".
Le due navi mercantili vicine Saavedra Tide e Ievoli Grey, sono intervenute lanciando zattere di salvataggio e poi salvando i superstiti. Questa mattina, quest'ultima ha portato a Lampedusa 32 superstiti e due cadaveri. Sull'isola "i superstiti hanno riferito di essere partiti dalla costa libica come un gruppo di 105 persone: si presume quindi che più di 70 siano le persone disperse in mare. Lo Stato italiano, Malta, e l'Unione Europea sapevano delle persone in difficoltà e non sono intervenuti. Cosa dicono quei politici "cristiani" di fronte a questa strage della vigilia di Pasqua?". Il barcone, di colore rosso e marrone, era già affondato quando i soccorritori sono arrivati sul posto. I 32 sopravvissuti, ora nell'hotspot di Lampedusa, sono in stato di forte choc dopo essere rimasti per ore in acqua. Le autorità hanno ascoltato le loro testimonianze per chiarire la dinamica del naufragio.
