Very nice album that kinda drifts between synth pop and indie pop/rock

45 years ago yesterday, Visage released their self titled, debut album (1980). #80smusic #Visage #newwave #synthpop

Listened to this one a few times now.

Am a big fan of DA and this new rock-y direction was initially a surprise but makes sense given a lot of the music I've seen him point to as an influence, also feel like he's kinda leaning more into his synth-pop side.

The League Unlimited Orchestra, Love and Dancing, 1982 on A&M

Remix album by The Human League, released in 1982 on Virgin in the UK, Europe and Canada and on A&M in the US. (Name inspired by Barry White’s Love Unlimited Orchestra).

I love the version of “Hard Times” here – mostly instrumental versions, remixed by Martin Rushent.

This is another filing oddity – I put it under H in sequence with the Human League records rather than under L.

My copy—via a record fair at Mill No. 5—is an Electrosound Group Midwest pressing.

Frankfurt-based five-piece Newmen return to Berlin, bringing their hypnotic blend of floating synth-pop and grooving neo-kraut to Neue Zukunft. The occasion: their latest album Terminal Beach, a shimmering sonic loop inspired by a short story by science-fiction author J.G. Ballard.

On Terminal Beach, Newmen weave past and future into a musical Möbius strip, circling endlessly around the themes of dystopia and utopia. Early electronics, lush synth-pop textures, and motorik neo-kraut rhythms merge into a confident, stylish soundscape. The pulsating centerpiece, The Loop, opens like a long-lost Kraftwerk track with drifting synth melodies and vocoder vocals echoing algorithms and dreamlike nightmare chambers, before evolving into a melancholic man-machine mantra — “on (technical) repeat,” as one lyric puts it.

Lyrically and sonically, Newmen seem connected to both past and future at once, tackling topics from data overreach to the digital late-capitalist swirl of swiping, liking, and scrolling. Yet Terminal Beach is as much a commentary on our hyper-connected age as it is a soundtrack for drifting away — hypnotic, insightful, and irresistibly danceable.

Tracks like the kraut-bubbling Legato Linear wink at NEU!’s Hallogallo, beaming it onto the disco floor, while the clever and beautiful Echo System shifts perspectives from “I” to “you” in true Stereolab-inspired psychedelic pop fashion. The band delights in reconciling contrasts — Fleetwood Mac-meets-Can textures on Comfort Inn (nicknamed “Fleetwood Can”), or the groovy closing track Concrete Beach, which cheekily ends with the real-life hiss of their studio kettle.

Terminal Beach follows 2021’s Futur II, expanding Newmen’s retro-futurist vision into a final shore where paradise is absent and self-reflection takes center stage. It’s culture critique wrapped in glimmering, free-flowing sounds that make time feel irrelevant — and the future, hopeful again.

Sharing the stage, Cologne-based multi-instrumentalist Disso!ver (Roman Biewer) presents his second studio album Die völlige Abwesenheit von Punk. Drawing from krautrock, indie, dream pop and new wave, Biewer pairs hypnotic grooves with deadpan vocals and wry social commentary — questioning whether rebellion still burns beneath everyday routine or if we’ve learned to love the comfort of conformity.
