#NewZealand / #Aotearoa #CropSwap

Toha atu toha mai / I share with you, you share with me

"Crop Swap gatherings are for everyone who is happy to share. Just bring your garden's and kitchen's surplus, turn up in time (or even a little earlier to help with the set up), display your treasures nicely, walk around and admire your fellow crop swappers goodies, mix and mingle, share your best jam recipe and enjoy the presence of people who find joy in the moneyless exchange of #MotherNature's abundance. Once everyone is officially welcomed and the sharing is opened you are invited to mindfully take what you are interested in. Everything is there to go to a new home. Take your time and keep other's in mind, the slow ones, the children, the elders, so that everyone has the chance to fill their baskets with beautiful food. After this please help with the clean up, get home safely and tell everyone, how awesome it was. Next time, bring a friend!

Find a crop swap

Starting a Crop Swap hub in your area is super easy. All you need is a venue and the people. Depending on your climate, the season and the people you want to share with a Crop Swap gathering can be anywhere, in a hall, a sports club, a school, a cafe, a garage, in a park, under a pavilion or even in your living room. To make it accessible for everyone it is good to have parking close by. To make it attractive for families consider a space where children can run around safely. Having tables and a few chairs available is helpful to accommodate the needs of people with different abilities. Once you found a venue (and don't get caught up in that too much as you can always change it) invite your future fellow crop swappers. Again, possibilities are endless. There are community newspapers, school newsletters, letter box leaflets, information boards in garden centres, shops, libraries and environment centres, emails, Facebook and, of course, good old word of mouth invitations. Set a date and time for your first gathering and enjoy the flow."

#PleasantvilleNY - #SeedLibrary

#MtPleasantPublicLibrary

"#GrowYourOwn garden with the help of our Seed Library—a collection of quality, regional flower and vegetable seeds that you can 'check out' for free at the Main Library.

What is a Seed Library?

A Seed Library is a collection of flower and vegetable seeds that you can 'check out' for free. Some Seed Libraries include seeds that have been saved by library patrons, or seeds donated from nurseries. We might have those sources one day at Mt. Pleasant Library, but for now we have seeds purchased from quality regional seed producers in #Maine and #AccordNY.

The purpose of a Seed Library is to encourage #SustainableGardening and #biodiversity by providing free access to seeds. These initiatives empower community members to grow their own food; learn #SeedSaving skills; preserve local, rare, or #HeirloomPlant varieties; and reduce reliance on #CommercialSeedCompanies. This helps combat seed #monocultures that threaten the world's food supply.

How does our Seed Library work?

- Go to the Gardening Special Collection at the Main Library and browse our Seed Library binder which includes details about each type of seed we offer.
- Help yourself to up to 5 seed packets per visit.
- Fill out a short form listing which seeds you took and if there are any seeds you want to request so that we can keep our Seed Library well stocked.
- Go and plant a garden!

What kind of seeds do we have?

- Vegetables, such as Amish Paste Organic Tomato, Marketmore and 76 Organic Cucumber
- Herbs, such as Genovese Basil
- Flowers, such as Purple Stem Asters, which are a great source of nectar for #bumblebees and other #pollinators in the #HudsonValley, and #SpottedJoePyeWeed, which is a native, locally sourced perennial that supports #butterfly populations
Check out our Seed Library binder for the full list of seeds we offer!"

Today's #seeds that I'm working on sorting/packing for #VictoriaSeedLibrary were donated by #McKenzieSeeds - a longtime #Canada seeds supplier. These are the assorted bean seeds from them. They donated millions of seeds for our local seed library 💗
