Media release; 18 November 2025 A new report by Scientists for Global Responsibility (SGR) reveals that almost all official data on military greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions – even for those militaries with extensive GHG reporting practices – only reveals a small fraction of their carbon footprint.
Scope 3 emissions are where climate strategies are most often exposed.
They sit outside a company’s direct control — in supply chains, logistics, materials, and product use — yet they make up the majority of corporate carbon footprints.
Some companies are moving beyond reporting and treating Scope 3 as a procurement and design challenge — co-investing with suppliers, redesigning value chains, and accepting real trade-offs.
