C'était aussi le même dieu du feu qui descendait dans les cheminées chez les anciens païens et le même dieu du feu pour qui des enfants étaient brûlés et mangés lors des sacrifices humains pratiqués par ceux qui jadis avaient été le peuple de Dieu. Aujourd'hui le nom de Santa Claus vient de « Saint Nicolas ». En 1809, Washington Irving fut responsable d'avoir transformé le sévère et vieil évêque original en un nouveau et « joyeux St-Nick » dans son Knickerbocker History of New York. (La plupart des traditions de Noël de l'Amérique sont encore plus récentes que cela). L'expression anglaise « Old Nick », que l'on retrouve d'ailleurs dans le dictionnaire, est depuis longtemps reconnue comme un surnom du diable. Dans Apocalypse 2 :6 et 15, la Bible traite du sujet de la « doctrine des Nicolaïtes ». à propos de laquelle le Christ dit qu'il la hait.
