I have no desire to ever part with my Roadstar. It's my hot rod, my latest and longest I've ever had one, that I've built exactly how I want it (well, I am considering an overbore piston+cylinder kit to bring it up to 1800cc). Hot rods are fun, but there's something to be said for smooth riding on cool elegance, which is why I've been eyeballing BMW's R18 as a second bike. It's the only other bike that has wowed me like the Roadstar did 23 yrs ago.

70k miles & 23 yrs, this Yamaha has been very reliable. The only parts that failed were electrical: starter, rectifier (regulator), stator (alternator), and starter relay. Electrical problems suck, but easily fixed.
Oh, a clutch cable broke once, I wasn’t greasing it at the lever.
As you might guess, I don’t baby my bike, but the engine, drivetrain, and suspension have taken it all in stride. Original drive belt still looks new. Solid investment.
Why the Roadstar cont:
In 2000, the newly introduced 1600cc Roadstar had the biggest engine in a production motorcycle. Bragging rights didn’t hurt. ✅
The torque peak was at 2000 rpm, basically just off idle. Low end grunt is fun. ✅
In comparisons against the Harley Fatboy:
Roadstar was faster, handled better. ✅
The V-twin engine shook more at idle but smoothed out at speed, opposite of the Harley. Perfect ✅
The Yamaha was half the price ✅✅
Why did I choose a Yamaha Roadstar? My bike at the time was a Kawasaki KZ 1000, a large displacement “muscle bike” with an inline 4 cyl engine. I like power, especially excess power. But that bike was a beast to ride, and ugly. The Roadstar's V-twin engine, with more weight lower in the chassis, makes it more nimble. And it's a beautiful bike. Yamaha did an excellent job with the design, getting a lot of the details just right.
