3 pedestrian deaths in 1 month could prompt Windsor police to revisit jaywalking enforcement
A senior member of the Windsor Police Service (WPS) says the force may need to start charging people who are caught jaywalking after a number of road fatalities involving people crossing mid-block.

The fuel crisis and Australians’ love affair with petrol guzzling monster cars

Now that the government is spruiking BIG car owners to "unload excess weight" and do their 'little bit' because of dwindling reserves, we are looking back on last year 's headlines to unravel how we got here.:

Motorists killing road workers? Money over lives?
We'd rather not know

"The way road trauma was classified contributed to that visibility problem."

"A traffic controller killed at a roadworks site does not appear in a public 'road worker' category."

"...While Queensland published weekly road toll figures, there was no one publicly accessible source that integrated public road fatalities, work-related road deaths, serious injury hospitalisations in one place or in near-real time. Road workers are especially vulnerable because they are exposed on high-speed corridors where a single reckless decision can have catastrophic consequences."

"Tragically, one afternoon Suzanne was struck by a truck travelling 106km/h in a 60km/h zone. The truck drove on the footpath and killed her." >>

Yes, totally agree. A rolling five year average makes more sense to report, smoothing out those statistical one-offs (flukes) & better enabling sight or understanding of real change over time. Still an impressive achievement as it’s often said (in public health circles) that it can’t be done).

Australia’s rising road toll
“Data shows an increase in #speeding and running red lights in NSW and Victoria. ‘People have less patience with #traffic now after the #roads were much quieter for years.”

“There were 1,204 deaths on Australian roads in the 12 months to 31 March, an almost 6% increase. Of the total deaths, 557 were drivers, up 2.2%, while 189 were passengers, up 3.8%. #Pedestrian deaths increased by 22.6%, rising to 163, while motorcyclist deaths climbed 7% to 246.”

“People in regional Australia were almost five times more likely to die in road #crashes than those living in cities last year, the latest statistics show.'

#Children involved in a fatal crash are eight times more likely to have been struck by an SUV than a standard car.”

“The exponential rise in freight truck and heavy vehicle movements has far outstripped population growth.”

Reduce #RoadFatalities> “Design roads to appear riskier, which would slow down traffic and force users to consider each other. As driving becomes automated and requires less constant attention, it has de-skilled us as drivers.”
#Infrastructure for #walking and #cycling would help. Meanwhile, #Bellingen widens country roads..

Australia’s rising road toll: how the pandemic and a love of big cars are putting lives at risk

Decades of gains in road safety are being set back by the rise in SUV ownership and impatient drivers used to empty lockdown streets

The Guardian
Global road fatalities remain unacceptably high and rethinking mobility is the only solution

If we are to significantly reduce road traffic deaths, we need a new mobility hierarchy that prioritizes people above vehicles, and that values safety, sustainability, and inclusion above all else.
