A. hyperantus is finally returning to its usual area after avoiding it for two years. Due to increased car traffic on the bike path, most insects moved to safer areas, with most currently occupying a very small area covered in field thistles.

(And an additional shoutout to the Krefeld guy for blocking me on both of my Fediverse accounts - I can't block him back on here though - AND on Bluesky. That's a badge of honor.)

A friend bought a house with 2 fields on the Clwydian slopes of N Wales. In contrast to the surrounding heavily grazed farmland, they left the fields to re-wild & become meadow. I’ve just enjoyed watching a rare sight there: scores (yes, scores!) of Ringlet (Aphantopus hyperantus) & Meadow Brown butterflies flitting over the long flowering grasses. I love the velvety chocolate brown Ringlets.

@JanLuitPhotos I’m not expecting our Ringlets here for a couple more months but who knows? #Ringlet #Butterfly

My #WildflowerMeadow project 1/...

1. Late March 2022, Rank Bulbous False oat #Grassland

2. Late March, mown with #Scythe, arisings removed & mown again with lawnmower. All cuttings removed

3. Early July. False oat Grassland. Height without dense thatch beneath. Rankness removed.
#Ringlet #Butterflies loved it

4. Early July. Mown (method as in 2), to reduce grass vigour & soil Nutrients. Sadly this would have affected the ringlets. But the aim long term is to increase #Wildflowers
