I valichi restano chiusi.

Rharrit had predicted, bombs from Gaza to Iran.

Hala Rharrit had resigned from the State Department in April 2024, in protest. She had written that the genocide in Gaza would produce a regional war with Iran if Washington had not contained Israel. No one had listened to her. On February 28, 2026, Israel and the United States attacked Iran. Khamenei died. The region is burning.

On March 5th, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich visited the northern border with Lebanon and published a video. “Dahiyeh will soon be like Khan Yunis,” he said, after the army had ordered the immediate evacuation of the southern Beirut suburbs. Khan Yunis: the southern city of Gaza, where Anadolu Agency documents over 72,000 deaths, 172,000 injuries, and 90% of civilian infrastructure destroyed. Smotrich did not cite Khan Yunis as an example of tragedy. He used it as a measure. As a metric for war production.

Human Rights Watch stated on March 5th that the evacuation order in Beirut’s suburbs “raises serious risks of violations of international humanitarian law.” The same formulation used for Gaza. The same organizations. The same protocol that, in two years, has not stopped anything.

In Gaza, meanwhile, Father Ibrahim Faltas told ANSA on March 6th: “Gaza is forgotten.” The crossings remain closed. The UN managed to get 570,000 liters of diesel through Kerem Shalom, Dujarric’s spokesman stated, but Rafah remains blocked. In the markets of Deir el-Balah, civilians no longer stockpile. They are tired of hoping for a border that opens and closes according to the needs of others.

The genocide in Gaza was not an isolated incident: it was the first page of a manual. Smotrich quoted it publicly as a model. Rharrit had written it two years ago. No one looked for her.

“This Militaristic Approach Has Been a Failure”: Meet Hala Rharrit, First U.S. Diplomat to Quit over Gaza

Democracy Now! speaks with Hala Rharrit, the first State Department diplomat to publicly resign over the Biden administration’s policies backing Israel’s assault and siege of the Gaza Strip. Rharrit is an 18-year career diplomat who served as the Arabic-language spokesperson for the State Department in the region. “I could no longer be a part of the State Department and promote this policy. It’s an inhumane policy. It’s a failed policy that is helping neither Palestinians, neither Israelis,” Rharrit says. “We are not authorized to send military equipment, weapons to countries that commit human rights abuses. ICJ has determined plausible genocide, yet we are still sending billions upon billions of not just defensive weaponry, but offensive weaponry. It is tantamount to a violation of domestic law. Many diplomats know it. Many diplomats are scared to say it.” She adds, “I read the talking points that we were supposed to promote on Arab media. A lot of them were dehumanizing to Palestinians.” Rharrit also discusses how “corruption” in government allows for arms sales to continue. “I could not help but be concerned about the influence of special interest groups, of lobbying groups on our foreign policy and, as well, on Congress — on the people that decide whether or not some of those shipments of arms get sent. The bottom line is that our politicians should not be profiting from war. And unfortunately, we have some institutionalized corruption that enables that,” she says.
