Regularly spending time in the #metaverse still feels like science fiction to many — perhaps partly due to limited access to #VR equipment or because the technology's usefulness for everyday tasks is not yet evident to everyone. Meanwhile, regular users spend more and more time in virtual spaces, sometimes even disconnecting from the physical world.

The question how these two groups can be brought closer together will be discussed by Hugo do Nascimento from Federal University of Goiás in our upcoming #sfbtrr161 lecture. One of his research projects aims at creating bridges between virtual and physical spaces and investigates how an interaction between the two could be designed.

📆 Monday, December 15, 4 to 6 p.m.
📍 University of Konstanz, Room ZT 702 & online

IRIS Insights I Nico Formanek: Are hyperparameters vibes?
April 24, 2025, 2:00 p.m. (CEST)
Our second IRIS Insights talk will take place with Nico Formanek.
🟦
This talk will discuss the role of hyperparameters in optimization methods for model selection (currently often called ML) from a philosophy of science point of view. Special consideration is given to the question of whether there can be principled ways to fix hyperparameters in a maximally agnostic setting.
🟦
This is a WebEx talk to which everyone who is interested is cordially invited. It will take place in English. Our IRIS speaker, Jun.-Prof. Dr. Maria Wirzberger, will moderate it. Following Nico Formanek's presentation, there will be an opportunity to ask questions. We look forward to active participation.

For my next research talk (just a within-department one) I'm seriously considering a "you are the hero" talk format... 🤔

  • each slide will have 2 choices of which slide should be next
  • the audience will vote: raised hand, choice 1, lowered hand, choice 0
  • I'll be doing a very rough visual vote estimation and choose on the next slide accordingly (hopefully you can do within-presentation hyperlinks in #Powerpoint, I'll have to check that)
  • as a bonus there might be a little graph at the end to show people which path they chose within the talk

On the other hand... It might be too complicated
