A quotation from Jean Kerr

I do have a compulsion to read in out-of-the-way places, and it is often a blessing; on the other hand, it sometimes comes between me and what I tell the children is “my work.” As a matter of fact, I will read anything rather than work. And I don’t mean interesting things like the yellow section of the telephone book or the enclosures that come with the Bloomingdale bill about McKettrick classics in sizes 12 to 20, blue, brown, or navy @ 12.95 (by the way, did you know that colored facial tissue is now on sale at the unbelievably low price of 7.85 a carton? ). The truth is that, rather than put a word on paper, I will spend a whole half hour reading the label on a milk-of-magnesia bottle. “Philips’ Milk of Magnesia,” I read with the absolute absorption of someone just stumbling on Congreve, “is prepared only by the Charles H. Philips Co., division of Sterling Drug, Inc. Not to be used when abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or other symptoms of appendicitis are present, etc.”

Can anyone recommend alternative left leaning, or just well written #newspapers I can read in addition to #TheGuardian. I'm starting to find it's negative take on just about everything quite wearing. So am looking for some alternative generally well balanced news papers. How do people find the Financial Times/The Times? Is it generally well written and well argued (I appreciate btw that nothing is perfect!)

Just finished reading Measure What Matters, a book about OKRs (Objectives and Key Results). Really excited about attempting to adopt at my workplace, but worried about how I as a single employee can make a difference. But perhaps the mantra of doing instead of just talking will be good enough.

Essence of the book: Force yourself, your team or organization to describe what matters, and then how you will objectively measure progress and by extension when you have reached your objective.

Create transparency, accountability and alignment about what matters collectively to the organization.

Highly recommend the book.
