In Jewish folklore, King Solomon prayed to God to hide his death from the demons that Solomon had bound to himself with sorcery so that they would finish building his temple. Solomon died in prayer with his staff propping him up, and thus the demons completed the temple before realizing that their master was dead.

In the Goetia, Shax is a marquis who commands 30 legions of demons on evil horses. He can be summoned by a sorcerer to rob a person of anything. Sometimes Shax gives sorcerers good familiars, but other times he instead gives them treacherous ones. He is annoyed if summoned too often.
