Things weren't always so bad for women in #AncientGreece. In the #ArchaicAge, they had a little more freedom -- but not as much as women in nearby #Sparta or #Crete...
Women's Occupations in Ancient Greece
In the Archaic Age, young women âwere apparently not kept in physical seclusion, and had a reasonable degree of movementâ (Blundell, 69) but were still always accompanied by other women, and were #veiled.
As ancient Greece moved into the Athenian age, public institutions (with the exception of some religious ones), âwere male-dominated and revolved around characteristically male activities â #politics, #warfare, #athletics and #drinking partiesâ (Blundell, 76).
The only choices women had were to be #enslaved, #married, become #hetaerae (#prostitutes), or hold âsacred service rolesâ [#priesthood] (Connelly, 31) â though most religious positions were hereditary or reserved for the wealthy.
But after that, womenâs domain was pretty much limited to the household where âthey were entirely responsible for the production of textilesâ (Blundell, 71) and food preparation. The only time women could leave the home was to perform religious activities.
