Elephant ancestors' teeth evolved in response to long term changes in diet and climate in Africa

The latest study about of proboscideans (elephants and their ancient relatives) from the University of Helsinki provides proof that some proboscideans started to adapt to locally grass-rich environments in East Africa first by changing their behavior and starting to feed more on grasses. This happened in some lineages of proboscideans, such as choerolophodonts, much earlier than has been thought until now, about 23 to 11 million years ago in parts of East Africa.

The Proboscidea

#FossilAdventCalendar Day 1

We begin our journey north in #Ontario, #Canada πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ with the #Welland #mastodon (Mammut americanum) unearthed close to #NiagaraFalls and exhibited in the #RoyalOntarioMuseum. Like all #proboscideans - the group of #mammals that also includes #elephants - #mastodons had #tusks, but one is missing from this individual. The fact that the socket for its left tusk is closed suggests that this was a birth defect rather than the result of injury or disease.

Introduction. I'm the head curator at the #GrayFossilSite, #ETSU. I do #paleontology of #quaternary #mammals like extinct #proboscideans (mastodons...err... #Mammut). #Bison and #mammoth too, but only on Thursdays.

I'm fascinated with the #paleoecology of places around me--whether #GreatPlains and #prairies or high elevation #Appalachian #GrassyBalds.

My past life in #archaeology pops up quite often, especially the origins of North American #dogs and #megafaunal #extinctions.

Good morning, fellow #Proboscideans, and especially fellow Masto newbies who have migrated from Twi-sla! Toot toot

Morning coffee at Hawley Lock, Camden

@MissGeewiz it's surprising how dainty and nimble #proboscideans can be. They don't just drive around trees like a truck. They step around it in a way nothing that size normally could.
