The Transfer of Cetaceans: An Important Step for Animal Welfare
TORONTO (AP) — On Wednesday, the Canadian government approved a plan to transfer the last whales in captivity from a closed amusement park in Ontario to aquariums in the United States and Spain. This project could save these animals from a potential mass euthanasia, should the agreement be realized.
Currently, 30 belugas and four dolphins remain at the Marineland park in Niagara Falls, Ontario. The facility announced its intention to close and sell the park at the beginning of 2023, following the park’s closure to the public in the summer of 2024. To date, no sale has been announced.
