Longtime Southern Baptist leader Paul Pressler, who was accused of sexual abuse, dies at 94

Pressler was one of the co-architects of the Southern Baptist Convention’s “conservative resurgence,” an effort in the 1980s that reshaped the direction of America’s largest Protestant denomination.

Houston Public Media

As Mark Wingfield recently reported, Dallas attorney Gene Besen, who represents the Southern Baptist Convention, has stated publicly in a tweet,

"If want [sic] you want to hear is that Pressler was is [sic] dangerous predator who exploited boys based on his power and his false piety — I whole heartedly agree."

There are credible allegatinons, confirmed by an attorney for the SBC, that Pressler "exploited boys."

SBC attorney calls Pressler a ‘monster,’ a ‘predator’ and ‘of the devil’ – Baptist News Global

The question of who knew what when about Paul Pressler’s alleged molestation of boys and young men surfaced anew over the weekend in a series of tweets between the reporter who broke the story of sexual abuse in the Southern...

A number of folks replied to my thread linked below. As they've noted, though I spoke of Southern Baptist right-wing leader Paul Pressler abusing men, Texas Republican leader Jared Woodfill, an anti-gay activist, has sworn under oath that he knew from 2004 forward of credible allegations that Pressler had abused a child — and Woodfill did not cut his ties with Pressler.

As David French notes, when an icon of the left falls from grace sexually, right-wing folks and media are all over the story, reporting it in detail. But when one of their own — e.g., Paige Patterson and Paul Pressler, chief architects of the hard-right turn of the Southern Baptist Convention — falls, it's crickets. Nada. "Shortly after the Pressler settlement was announced, I looked for statements or commentary or articles by the conservative stalwarts who cover left-wing misconduct with such zeal. The silence was deafening. If you mainly receive your information from right-wing sources, the odds are good that you haven’t seen this news at all."

P.S. Pressler helped craft the SBC's heavy investment in politicized homophobia while he was committing indiscretions with MEN.

The case of the disgraced pastor Paul Pressler offers a window into why America is so divided as a nation.

The New York Times

"It started two years before Pressler, then a Texas appeals court judge, and Paige Patterson, then an academician, launched the 'conservative resurgence' that allowed fundamentalists to take control of the SBC."

That "conservative resurgence" firmly aligned the SBC with the Republican party and made the SBC a religious arm of the GOP during years in which the GOP and SBC have attacked LGBTQ people and their rights in every way possible.

"That’s long enough to expose the Southern Baptist Convention’s most malevolent hypocrite to the shame of his reported double life.

Just before the end of the year, the SBC reached a settlement in a lawsuit that claimed Pressler began raping a teenage boy in Houston in 1977 and continued the sexual abuse across decades."

Here's how Marv Knox opens his response to the news that the Southern Baptist Convention has settled a lawsuit re: allegations that SBC kingmaker Paul Pressler sexually abused a teenaged boy (at least seven more men have also alleged abuse by Pressler):

"Thank God, Paul Pressler has lived to the ripe old age of 93."

Pressler has denied the claims and has not been criminally charged. However, in addition to Rollins, at least seven other men have accused him of sexual misconduct throughout four decades.

Mike Johnson was dean of a Christian law school that didn’t exist

Mike Johnson does not typically mention one aspect of his work before being elected to Congress. He was once chosen to be the dean of a small Baptist law school. But the school ultimately collapsed without enrolling students or opening its doors. The episode is a reminder of how little is know about Johnson, who quickly rose from relative obscurity to suddenly become House speaker last week. His time at the law school offers insight into how Johnson navigated leadership challenges that echo the chaos, feuding and hard right politics that define the House Republican majority he now leads.
