And the defensive posture coming from groups like this always freely employs lies, since lies told to do the Lord's work aren't, they want to imagine, lies at all.

Meanwhile people with eyes wide open are walking away from religious groups like this (there are definitely strong parallels with sectors of US Catholicism) — walking away in droves for very good reasons.

They are furious that the Southern Baptist Convention apologized for its support of slavery and segregation. They want to claim that it was forced to issue that apology by wicked forces trying to tear the SBC down.

When you start from these starting points — I'm right; I'm holy; God is on my side; you are not right or holy; you are on the devil's side — there is nowhere to go except on the defensive.

Their starting point: women are trying to undermine evangelical churches, because women are (fill in the blank: wicked is the starting word). Also key to the starting point: evangelical churches are always right and holy and never make mistakes and anyone calling on them to admit or apologize for mistakes is doing the devil's work.
