Catch of the Day: The Spirit of Opera 12 Lives On! 🦦💻
Hey Retro Fans!
Just in time for the weekend, we spotted a wonderful exotic in our logs that proves great software concepts never truly die. We recorded a visit from the Otter Browser on a UNIX (X11) system!
Who among you remembers the classic Opera 12? Before Opera abandoned its proprietary Presto engine in 2013 and became just another Chromium clone, the browser was famous for its incredibly customizable interface, built-in mail clients, and unique power-user features. When the old Opera was killed off, the community was devastated.
But retro nerds never give up! The Otter Browser is a passionate open-source project dedicated to rebuilding that exact classic Opera 12 experience from scratch to keep the old "look & feel" alive. The fact that someone is using this fantastic enthusiast project on a Unix workstation to casually browse the Frog pond proves once again how diverse, stubborn, and creative our alternative browser scene truly is.
We wish you all a wonderful weekend!
