Tonight we did the first corrections session for our “Kain und Abel” CD. We recorded the final orchestra rehearsals for the balance and other details, the actual recording took place during the premiere. There will be another corrections session on Wednesday, and then, hopefully, the Tonmeister will have all he needs to mix a perfect recording. Once the CD is out, learing the piece will be much easier for everyone who wants to perform it! I whish I had had that!

Felix Weingartners Oper "Kain und Abel" wurde 1914 in Darmstadt uraufgeführt, und das Staatstheater Darmstadt bringt sie zum ersten Mal seitdem wieder auf die Bühne. Die Musik steht in der Tradition von Richard Wagner. Weingartner erzählt die Geschichte von Kain und Abel etwas anders, als wir sie aus der Bibel kennen, denn Adam hat hier vor Eva noch eine andere Frau – Lilith – und mit ihr zwei Kinder: Abel und Ada. Erst in zweiter Ehe kommt dann Eva hinzu, mit der Adam Kain zeugt. Kain wiederum vergewaltigt seine Halbschwester Ada, womit das Verhängnis seinen Lauf nimmt. Das kombiniert Regisseur Kerem Hillel mit der Psalm-Vertonung "Aus der Tiefe" von Lili Boulanger. Musikalisch überzeugt der Abend sehr; der Inszenierung mangelt es dagegen an Ideen.
We saw the final performance of the 50th season of Opera Roanoke, the Sunday matinee showing of Engelbert Humperdinck’s “Hansel and Gretel”.
Well done, but I will confess that I don’t love through-composition as a style. Give me number opera with big standout arias.

This was my outfit for the party after the premiere of “Kain und Abel.” The composer Felix Weingartner originally described my character Ada’s outfit as “loosely wrapped in a robe of white, fluffy fabric,” but in our production, she wears a burgundy business suit and an orange turtleneck sweater. So I wore my own fluffy white ensemble to the party!
