Oric-1 и Atmos против ZX Spectrum: битва за рынок домашних ПК

В начале 80-х годов британские гостиные наполнились писком кассетных магнитофонов, а экраны телевизоров — рябью бегущих по ним разноцветных полосок. Наступила эпоха ZX Spectrum. Однако успех детища Клайва Синклера не давал покоя конкурентам, и самые отчаянные из них замахнулись на святое: решили отвоевать часть рынка у культового домашнего компьютера. Одну из таких попыток предприняла британская компания Tangerine, создавшая персоналку, которая сочетала в себе запоминающийся дизайн и достаточно мощную для своего времени начинку, а стоила она при этом чуть дешевле «Спектрума» — идеальный рецепт для победы в конкурентной борьбе. Казалось, вот-вот школьники начнут писать свои первые программы не на «Спекки», а на новом «Орике». Но что-то пошло не так, и история, как это часто бывает в IT, свернула на совершенно иной путь. И что же дальше?...

Jour 2 : mon premier ordinateur.

C'était un Oric-1, acheté en 1984.

J'avais découvert un premier ordinateur au collège. Ça m'avait plu : une machine qui faisait ce qu'on lui disait de faire, pas besoin de la convaincre ni d'argumenter !

Mon ordinateur utilisait une TV cathodique en noir et blanc (pas les moyens pour la couleur) et des specs. de rêve : CPU 8 bits à 1 MHz, 16 ko de mémoire RAM, un mode haute résolution à 240 x 200 pixels et une sauvegarde sur cassette audio (magnétophone non fourni).

Je n'ai pas pris de photo personnelle alors je vous montre une photo trouvee sur le Web. L'ordinateur est entièrement inclus dans le clavier.

Ça peut paraître trivial comme souvenir mais ça aura finalement façonné ma vie future : j'ai publié des programmes en Basic, orienté mes études puis ma vie professionnelle sur ces technologies. Et aujourd'hui encore ce réseau social en est une manifestation !

Que de temps passé depuis, plus de quarante ans. Mais un souvenir marquant pour moi.

My first computer was given to me in 1983 when I was 16 years old.
This was the Oric-1, closely followed by an upgrade to the Oric Atmos.

For years the main one was Euphoric, which was strictly DOS based. #Euphoric

This excellent emulator is available for many platforms with pre-built binaries. For Linux however, you have to build from source. #Oricutron

Since I had not ran Oricutron in quite a while, I needed to chose what host machine to run it on.
I chose my Asus EeePC 1000 Netbook, a 32 bit machine on which I have #BunsenLabs #Linux running.
I purchased this practical computer way back in March 2009.

Ran into compiling issues, mostly with the SDL library.
Spent a few days of spare time battling with multiple compile error codes and lots of Google-foo searches.
Basically gave up last evening, and decided to try the win32 pre-built binary via Wine.
It worked great!!!
Would I prefer Oricutron running as a Linux program? Yes, but sometimes you have to go with what works.
Now I can play game classics such as Centi and Hopper, as well as maybe get back into BASIC programming.

Any other Oric users out there in the #Fediverse?
