We talk a lot about threats to libraries—book bans, political intimidation, budget cuts—as a threat to democracy itself.

But what happens when these institutions built to safeguard democracy become vulnerable to undermining it from within — including through their own budgets funding surveillance capitalism?

That question is raised in "Save Troy: Liberate The Library," a provocative micro-essay by Kula's own @Dieter_Boolean, to be published in the new, participative book series 'Bibliothek & Gesellschaft' (Libraries and Society).

Sichtweisen der Informatik – Wolfgang Coy 1992
Ich schaue mir gern abends, wenn die anderen fernsehen, Vorlesungen oder einigermaßen fundierte Videos zu nichtaktuellen Themen an. Also, liebe Universitäten, macht mehr Open Access und Open Knowledge damit wir auch was lernen können. Einigermaßen fasziniert war ich von Alke Martens, Professorin an der Uni Rostock, die Ethik und Digitalität verbindet. Da habe ich mal gelernt, was der Unterschied zwischen Digitalität und Digitalisierung ist. Frau Prof. Martens kommt aus der kognitiven KI-Forschung, die viel älter als ChatGPT ist. Eine Buchempfehlung war „Sichtweisen der Informatik“ - Wolfgang Coy, 1992 bei Vieweg erschienen. Es greift, bevor es überhaupt Internet gab, Fragen über Philosophie und Politik des Digitalen auf.

Quasi so ein Sokrates der Digitalphilosophie. Ich werde es lesen (und dann berichten). Bei Frau Martens habe ich besonders die akribische Art, mit Worten umzugehen, geschätzt. Wenn man etwas wirklich tief besprechen will, muss man vollkommen korrekte Worte wählen. Das klingt etwas gestelzt und ist nicht für den Alltag, aber es ist wichtig. Umso schockierter war ich, als ich eine aktuelle Vorlesung sah, die für Frau Martens Verhältnisse regelrecht in einem debilen Neusprech gehalten wurde. Wurde in den alten Vorlesungen einfach vorausgesetzt, dass man den Unterschied zwischen Platon und Aristoteles kennt, und das ist auch eine Grundvoraussetzung jeder Betrachtung/(europäischer) Metaphysik. Wurde das nun so erwähnt, als sei es zu schwer für die Studenten, und es würde reichen, dass man den Namen aussprechen kann. Dann braucht man die Studenten auch nicht Studierende nennen, weil viel studiert haben, können sie nicht. Als Student braucht man nicht zwingend zu studieren, das reicht auch manchmal Saufen völlig.

If decentralization is the future of social media, where millions or even billions of people share knowledge, then we can learn a lot from how the Open Knowledge Foundation (@okfn) and the Wikimedia Foundation (@wikimediafoundation) built cross-border, international movements with clear missions.

These two organizations are just two examples, but they demonstrate an important point: decentralization worked because communities were intentionally nurtured, not just because the technology was open.

The Fediverse, powered by the ActivityPub protocol, already has the technical capacity to thrive (UI tweaks aside).

What we still lack is the decentralization of communities, including shared ownership, coordination, and a mission that extends beyond individual instances.
