The city was founded in the early Middle Ages around the bishopric of Osnabrück, which was established in 780 and located at a junction of old trade routes. In the late Middle Ages and early modern period, Osnabrück was a Hanseatic city, more precisely a principal city of the Westphalian quarter of the Hanseatic League. Osnabrück, together with Münster, about 50 km away, also became famous as the place where the Peace of Westphalia was negotiated and signed in 1648.
According to its own statement, Osnabrück still adheres to the guiding principle of ‘#Peace as a task – committed to peace’ in the spirit of peace, which determines the cultural and political life of the city.
Apart from its interesting history, Osnabrück also has many very pretty buildings. Take a look for yourself!
